Cheating during exams

A Master's degree examination at Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai University witnessed cheating taking place like never before

ISLAMABAD: I recently sat for an examination for my Master’s degree in sociology, conducted by Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai University at Government Mumtaz Degree College, Khairpur. The examination hall did not seem like an examination centre at all. Students were allowed to use mobile phones, e-books and other gadgets to solve the paper, during which I witnessed cheating taking place like never before. The proctors seemed inattentive to all that was going on. I somehow managed to continue taking my exam in the prevailing atmosphere. Afterwards, I met the principal and demanded that a conducive environment be provided for future exams. The principal and staff entertained my complaint and took initiatives to ensure a suitable atmosphere for exams, one that’s free of disturbance. Moreover, the dean of the natural sciences department visited our examination centre along with other members of a vigilance team and took note of the violations of the academic code of conduct.

I am grateful to the principal and the vigilance teams for the steps taken against the cancer of cheating that is all too well-known to the Pakistani academic culture. I would further like to urge the vice-chancellor of the university concerned and the principals of all examination centres across the country to take stringent measures against the culture of cheating so that merit thrives and the country prospers on a sound footing.
