KARACHI:

With a com‘men’dable start, the Karachi Fashion Week (KFW) Men’s Fashion 2015 drew to a close on Sunday. Eastern designs shone bright on the runway amid dashes of Western-wear. It’s no cakewalk to rivet attention towards a show devoted to menswear in a woman’s world of fashion, but the KFW platform shows great promise in bringing fads to the fore for the fashion-conscious Pakistani man.

Umar Sayeed

Dapper or dull? Sayeed has been in the fashion industry for over two decades and his latest collection was testament to his know-how and finesse as a designer. The showcase featured classic desi pieces such as sherwanis, kurtas and waistcoats in a range of colours well-suited for a man who wants to stick to staples. With sherwanis in hues such as beige and black and draped with heavy yet intricate embroidered sherwani stoles, the line is sure to garner the attention of a groom who wants to keep his wedding look traditional and regal. The delicate gold-wire and floral embroidery accentuated the sherwanis. Sayeed tactfully paired the tops with plain white tang pyjamas that toned down the heavy outfits. The mauve-coloured waistcoat with intricate gold work was particularly striking.

Collection: Shaam-i-Awadh

Dapper or dull? Playing with rich fabrics such as silk, jamawar, velvet and brocade, the designer duo paid an ode to the royalty of pre-partition India. They showcased subcontinental exuberance through the colour palette and work, using shades such as royal blue and deep red and gold-wire work on the neckline and sleeves, and paired the outfits with kullas and shawls. The black and gold suit and aqua-coloured waistcoat were certain standouts.

Emraan Rajput

Dapper or dull? Rajput has refined his technique over the years. With colours that were well-contrasted for his Western line, he brought forth tuxedos, ties and even handkerchiefs. Actor Faysal Qureshi looked dapper in a tux as the showstopper. The apparel shown seemed to be good options for future wedding wear.

Collection: Winter 2015

Dapper or dull? The designer label showcased some of their best leather bags and shoes. The collection included a range of accessories, including briefcases and hand-carry suitcases to moccasins. Although men’s accessories are a niche market, they are certainly picking up across Pakistan and FHS’s sophisticated items make for a good start.

Dapper or dull? The finale rested on the shoulders of the designer who has time and again spelt his magic with signature gold-wire work and his long sherwanis and short waist-coats in lighter shades of beige were clear winners. Mustard coloured kurtas for men were the highlight of his collection. Although the showcase did justice to his legacy, the excessive use of beige and off-white made the collection seem monotonous at places. Winter clothes have a very warm and cosy feeling associated with them and light colours like these don’t have the same impact.
