The curse of plagiarism

Letter December 24, 2015
Plagiarism is rampant in educational institutions, public and private capacity-building institutions and NGOs

ISLAMABAD: Plagiarism is reported to be rampant in our educational institutions, public and private capacity-building institutions and NGOs, where so-called researchers, scholars and resource persons usually come up with PowerPoint presentations that contain nothing but plagiarised material. Ours is a morally and intellectually corrupt and dishonest society. Therefore, every effort is made to promote, project and popularise these plagiarists, devoid of innate wisdom, creativity and scholarship. Capacity-building organisations, including academies, often invite those involved in plagiarism, to lecture their students. Students, budding scholars and trainees often end up emulating such plagiarist presenters.

Such people have promoted a contemptuous ‘cut and paste culture’ in society. These ‘resourceful’ people manage to secure important positions and receive repeated extensions in their contractual employment. Anyone lodging complaints against the plagiarists placed at key posts see no success. The relevant federal and provincial organisations should take strict legal action against plagiarists. We should only focus on educating our future generations using original content in scholarly presentations.
