Vivo Y55 5G Review

Towards the mid of January 2022, well-known Chinese manufacturer, Vivo, decided to launch its brand-new Vivo Y55 5G, another addition to its already launched Y-series, with hints of releasing the smartphone very soon in global market.

Color & Price:

The smartphone comes with a dual-sim system. Both sims are top of the line 5G-enabled and all other frequency bands are supported. The mobile phone comes in two colors; Black and Blue. This 5G enabled phone may cost around Rs. 49,999 and will be available in the Pakistani markets soon.

Display:

The upcoming smartphone, Vivo Y55, comes with a relatively big 6.58 inch IPS LCD display, which has a resolution of 1080x2408 pixels that yields a density of around 401 pixels per inch. The phone has an overall screen-to-body ratio of around 83.8%. The big screen has a refresh rate of 60Hz and a touch-sampling rate of 180Hz.

The newly launched Vivo Y55 comes with a large 6.58 inch IPS LCD Capacitive Touchscreen display which has additional features of representing 16 million colors and Multitouch. In my opinion, this display is very bad; I mean an LCD panel? This screen has a resolution of 1080x2408 pixels which yields a density of around 401 pixels per inch.

Processor/Chipset:

The mobile device contains a chipset manufactured by MediaTek. The newly launched Vivo Y55 is embedded with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G SoC. This chipset runs on a 7nm technology. The chipset runs alongside an octa-core processor that consists of two 2.20GHz cores and six 2.00GHz cores. The smartphone is using Mali-G57 MC2 as the GPU. Android version 11 is currently being used on this mobile device and this operating system is using Vivo’s own in-house Funtouch 12.0 as the user interface.

This time as well, the new Vivo Y55 is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G chipset. This is a very good SoC since it is based on 7nm technology which makes it very powerful in terms of performance and energy-efficient, countering heating issues. There is a bit of a laggy feeling since this processor is still a bit cheap as it is usually found in smartphones that lie in the mid-range instead of the upper-mid range.

RAM & Storage:

The phone is released in a single, very basic memory variant of 128GB internal storage having 4GB of RAM. Along with this, there is an additional slot for a microSD expandable card which means internal memory can be expanded by using a memory card of up to 256GB. There is also an option to add 1GB virtual RAM. The additional feature of adding up to 1GB of virtual RAM which is so basic that it won’t even make a difference.

Camera:

The back side of the phone contains a triple-camera system having a primary camera of 50MP wide angle sensor, while the other camera is a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. There is a Dual-LED flash light along with this camera system. The back camera can be used to record 1080p videos at 30fps.  The front camera is present inside a waterdrop notch that has an 8MP sensor. This front camera can be used to capture 1080p videos at 30fps, and is very helpful when face recognition software is used.

While visually there are three camera lenses, only one primary camera lens is essential which takes good quality images. The saturation and brightness are of good quality and the overall picture quality is very good. The major missing feature is the absence of an ultra-wide sensor that has become a key feature of all recently released mobile devices.

Battery:

The phone contains a large Li-Po 6000 mAh battery pack which is non-removable. Vivo has added extra functionality by supporting fast charging technology using an 18W power adapter which can charge the smartphone in less time. This ensures that the smartphone remains awake for about 36-42 hours without requiring any charge.

Although this will charge the phone in a shorter time period, this is still not good enough as the big battery takes a long time to completely charge. Vivo should have included a 25W or a 33W fast charging technology which would have been ideal in this fast-moving era.

Extra Features:

The weight of the smartphone is around 187 grams and the dimensions are 164mm x 75.9mm x 8.3 mm. The back of the smartphone is made of plastic along with the entire frame of the smartphone. The front of the smartphone is made of glass, but it is not protected by any glass protection.

Pros & Cons:

Considering the internal software of this smartphone, the new Vivo Y55 is based on Android version 11, while this operating system is using Vivo’s own Funtouch 12.0 as the user interface. This shows that even the software system is outdated on this smartphone as Android version 12 has already been launched and this phone is still launched with Android 11.0. Vivo has used the latest version of its own Funtouch UI 12, but for Andoid version, an older version is used.  This is not a good step since Funtouch OS was originally launched for Android 12 and it should have been launched alongside the latest version of Android. Hence, this is a big disadvantage.

On the bottom is the 3.5mm headphone jack alongside a charging port, a primary microphone and a speaker grill for the loud speakers. The front of the smartphone is made of glass, but there is no screen protection. One small mistake, Kaboom!

The smartphone comes with a number of sensors. Some of them are: Compass, Gyro, Proximity, Fingerprint (side-mounted), and Accelerometer. The most frequently used sensor is the highly-responsive fingerprint sensor present on the power button of the smartphone at the right side of the frame. This makes it easy to use and hence the response time is very good and the scanner is very efficient at detecting fingerprints.

Given all the features, the smartphone is not worth the hype and since it is not justifying the big price tag, we would not recommend this smartphone. However, if Vivo decided to lower the price tag, that would be another thing, but for now, it is not a viable option to buy Vivo Y55 given the high price range.
