OnePlus 10 Pro Review

In the starting days of January 2022, Chinese manufacturer, OnePlus, decided to launch their flagship model smartphone, the new OnePlus 10Pro. The new smartphone contains a single cellular option of 5G-enabled dual Nano-sim. The smartphone comes in two special textured colors; Volcanic Black and Emerald Green.

The newly released OnePlus 10Pro was much-awaited as people were waiting to see what new changes the company has incorporated into its new smartphone. The weight of this new smartphone is around 200.5 grams and the dimensions are 163mm x 73.9mm x 8.6mm. The entire frame of the phone is made of aluminum. The back of the phone is made of glass and is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, while the front of the phone is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.

Display:

The newly released smartphone has a very large screen of 6.7 inches LTPO2 AMOLED display, which has a resolution of 1440x3216 pixels. This resolution gives an output density of around 525 pixels per inch, while the phone has a high screen-to-body ratio of 90.0%. The display has a high refresh rate of 120Hz. The aspect ratio of this smartphone is set at the ideal 20:9, while the phone has a typical brightness level of 500 nits and a peak brightness level of 1300 nits.

Chipset/Processor:

The phone comes with a chipset powered by Qualcomm, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-gen 1, which runs on a 4nm technology. The chipset runs on an octa-core processor that has one 3.00GHz core, three 2.50GHz cores and four 1.80GHz cores. The smartphone is using Adreno 730 as the GPU. Latest android version 12.1 is currently being used in OnePlus 10Pro as the operating system and this operating system is using ColorOS 12.1 as the user interface.

RAM & Storage:

The phone, OnePlus 10Pro is released in three powerful memory variants; 128GB internal storage having 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage having 12GB RAM and 256GB internal storage having 12GB RAM. There is no dedicated slot for microSD expandable card, which means internal memory cannot be expanded.

Camera:

The rear side of the phone contains a triple-camera system having a primary camera of 48MP side angle sensor, while the other two cameras are an 8MP telephoto sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide sensor. The camera system was calibrated in collaboration with Hasselblad Group.

There is a Dual-LED dual-tone flash light along with this camera system. The back camera can be used to record 8K videos at 30fps, 4K videos at 30/60/120fps and 1080p videos at 30/60/240fps. The front camera is present inside a tiny punch-hole notch that has a 32MP wide angle sensor. This front camera can be used to capture 1080p videos at 30fps, and is very helpful when face recognition software is used.

On the front end, the selfie camera on the new OnePlus 10Pro is present inside a very tiny punch-hole notch placed at the top left corner of the front screen. This is a single camera system that contains an extremely efficient and high-quality SonyIMX615 32MP wide angle sensor which uses the added functionality of Auto-HDR mode to capture images. This is exactly the same camera as the predecessor OnePlus 9Pro.

The selfie images are very natural looking and there is no shade on skin. The edges are good and there is right amount of blur in the background. The front camera can record 1080p videos at 30fps. I mean, come on OnePlus, just a single option for a phone of such a high price? The use of 1080p is just low level given that we are talking about a phone launched in 2022. Although the 1080p videos are good, those are no way near the front camera video recording options found in phones of this price range. The unchanged camera sensor and lack of technology makes the front camera in the OnePlus 10Pro, a major drawback.

Battery:

The phone contains a large Li-Po 5000 mAh battery pack which is non-removable. The smartphone supports extremely quick fast charging of 80W, which can charge the phone very quickly. The smartphone also supports fast wireless charging of 50W and an added option of reverse wireless charging is also present.

Price:

The phone's expected to be launched at a price tag of Rs.169,999/=. Now that’s a big amount. Let’s see how OnePlus is justifying it. Stay tuned.

The newly launched OnePlus 10Pro is launched in the extreme-high segment of smartphones given the big price tag. Let’s talk about the external features of the phone. The phone comes in two unique colors; Emerald Green and Volcanic Black. The back of the smartphone is made of a sandstone-textured, glass like finish.

This gives the phone a matte touch and hence the phone is easier to grip. Underneath the textured glass, there are micro crystals which give a glitter effect. The cameras are present inside a rectangular patch that curves towards the edge, more or less like the camera design of Samsung S21 Ultra.

This module contains three rings that incorporate the triple-camera setup with a fourth ring containing the specs. The module has Hasselblad branding on the side. The back of the phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The entire frame of the smartphone is made of high-quality aluminum. The right side contains the usual power button and OnePlus’s own signature Alert Slider. On the left side are the volume rocker keys.

On the bottom, there is a Dual Sim tray, a primary microphone, a charging port and grills for 1 of 2 stereo speakers which are powered by Dolby Atmos. Talking about the front, the phone has a curved display with a small punch-hole notch that contains the front camera. The 2nd Dolby Atmos-powered stereo speaker is present inside the earpiece. This front of the phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Even though there is a water-resistant seal on the sim tray, there is no IP68 rating yet, but, the phone is expected to be IP68 certified once it is launched globally.

The front-on display on the newly launched smartphone is a huge 6.7 inch LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) 2.0 AMOLED display. This screen ensures that the phone can display content using HDR10+ technology. Due to this AMOLED display, the phone can represent up to 1.07 Billion colors which gives a unique user experience.

The front display has a high resolution of 1440x3216 which results in an extremely high density of around 525 pixels per inch. LTPO2 AMOLED display gives an added feature of variable refresh rate and the user can select refresh rate from 1-120Hz. There is a touch-sampling rate of 1000Hz.

OnePlus 10 Pro Review

Due to the high resolution technology, the smartphone has a typical brightness level of 500 nits while it has a peak brightness level of around 1300 nits, which makes sure that there is no problem in using this smartphone under direct sunlight. Although this is an extremely good specification for the big screen size, this is not a big change from last year’s OnePlus 9Pro.

Talking about the performance components of the newly launched smartphone, the first and foremost attraction is the use of Qualcomm’s powerful chipset that OnePlus has embedded in its new entrant. Qualcomm has gained popularity after the release of their brand new, high-tech Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-gen 1 chipset. This chipset is one of the finest SoCs as it is extremely powerful given that it is based on 4nm technology.

This helps the phone to not heat up and so far, the phones using this chipset have been a huge success. This highly efficient chipset runs alongside an equally powerful octa-core processor that has one 3.00GHz core, three 2.50GHz cores, and four 1.80GHz cores. The phone is using Adreno 730, the very recently released GPU, in order to get enhanced graphics when ultra-high settings are set. This combination has ensured that there are no lags or jitters when the phone is being used in heavy-duty gaming or while multi-tasking.

The operating system on the new smartphone is currently running on the latest Android version 12.1, a version that does not require any introduction. Even when Android 12.1 has just been released, it has already reserved the top spot with its speed and usability and hence there is a very little chance that it will leave that mark.

Since the phone has only been released in China for now, the operating system is running ColorOS 12.1 as the UI to display the interface. There are various articles that hint that OnePlus will launch the phone with the UI of OxygenOS, thanks to their collaboration with Oppo, but, we would have to wait and watch what OnePlus decides.

The new OnePlus 10Pro is released in three memory variants which are; 128GB internal storage having 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage having 8GB RAM, and another option of 256GB internal storage having 12GB RAM. Since this is a flagship-level smartphone, the phone does not include a dedicated slot for expandable memory cards.

Talking about the component that can make or break a phone’s reputation in today’s market, the camera setup. The new OnePlus 10Pro comes with a triple-camera setup on the rear side of the phone. The first is the primary camera, which is a Sony IMX789 48MP, 23mm wide angle sensor that uses additional features of omnidirectional PDAF, Laser AF and OIS to capture images.

Next in line is the 8MP, 77mm telephoto sensor that uses added features of PDAF, OIS and 3.3x optical zoom to take high-quality zoomed-in images. The third camera, the absolute beauty, is the high-end Samsung ISOCELL JN1 50MP, 14mm ultra-wide sensor that can capture images at a whopping 150degrees field of view, that’s some number. All these cameras are calibrated by Hasselblad Color Calibration and contain a 3D nano-crystal ceramic lens cover to protect it from breaking.

The smartphone comes with a number of sensors. Some of them are; Accelerometer, Proximity, Color Spectrum, Gyro, in-display, Fingerprint sensor and Compass. The most frequently used sensor is the fingerprint sensor, which is an optical sensor and is present under the display. This sensor is extremely fast given the high-quality LTPO2 AMOLED display and helps users to keep their data safe. The smartphone contains a dual-stereo speaker that can output high-quality sound without any muffle/mute.

Considering all the above features, we thought that this was the phone which was going to break all records due to its high specifications, but after the tests, the story is different. Although OnePlus 10Pro might be their best flagship phone right now, but it is truly just a minor improvement to last year’s OnePlus 9Pro, and given that the display and cameras are somewhat the same, this smartphone is not worth it and we would not recommend this high-priced mobile device.
