My blood was boiling: Prasad recalls dismissing Sohail in 1996 World Cup

Former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad, after 24 years, recalled his infamous exchange with Pakistan opener Aamir Sohail during the 1996 World Cup quarter-final.

The incident took place during the second innings when Sohail smacked Prasad for a four through the covers and then had a verbal spat, while pointing towards the boundary rope, which spurred the pacer.

The Pakistan opener was clean bowled, when attempting another attacking shot, on the very next ball.

 “There’s not even a single day that goes by without anybody, whoever sees me, come what may, would definitely ask me, every single day from the last 24 years,” Prasad said on Fancode.

“He should’ve just gone back to his crease probably after getting that, but there was some exchange of words and a gesture that he made which didn’t really go well. Obviously, with the entire nation and spectators who were watching, and of course, with me as well. My blood was really boiling and we needed a wicket,” he added.

Former pacer admitted that he was fortunate to not be fined for his gesture after dismissing Sohail.

“I would’ve been penalised for that sort of gesture because that’s when the ICC Code of Conduct had come into the picture during the ‘96 World Cup; so I had to be very careful. And Shepherd was the umpire, so Azhar, Srinath and Sachin, everybody came to my rescue, otherwise, I would’ve probably been penalised or may be banned,” he added.

Indian captain Virat Kohli during a recent Instagram live session termed the aforementioned occasion as one of the most satisfying bowled dismissal of all-time.

"For me, there is no clean bowled as satisfying as that in the history of the sport. It is one of the most iconic moments. Those memories are golden memories,” Kohli said.

The Men in Green failed to chase 288 runs and were knocked out of the tournament.
