Catholic League urges Congress to censure Marjorie Taylor Greene after remarks seen as targeting Pope Francis.

A prominent religious rights organisation has called for the formal censure of U.S. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene following a social media post many believe was a veiled reference to the death of Pope Francis.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is urging Congress to take disciplinary action against Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene after a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, appeared to link global leadership changes to divine intervention.

Greene wrote, “Today there were major shifts in global leaderships. Evil is being defeated by the hand of God,” in a post made shortly before 10:45 a.m. on Monday—just hours after the Vatican confirmed the death of Pope Francis.

Today there were major shifts in global leaderships.

Evil is being defeated by the hand of God.
— Marjorie Taylor Greene 🇺🇸 (@mtgreenee) April 21, 2025

While the message did not name the pontiff directly, Catholic League President William Donohue said the implication was clear.

“As Newsweek journalist Gabe Whisnant noted, the two major world leadership changes that were announced [Monday] were the death of Pope Francis and the resignation of Klaus Schwab as the head of the World Economic Forum,” Donohue said in a letter to the House Ethics Committee.

“It is obvious that Greene’s remark about God defeating ‘evil’ was aimed at the Holy Father,” Donohue added.

Calling Greene a former Catholic, Donohue argued that while she is entitled to express views about the Church, she crossed a line.

“No sitting member of Congress has the right to denigrate the leader of a world religion,” he wrote.

We are asking that Republicans and Democrats come together to censure Marjorie Taylor Greene for her bigoted remarks.https://t.co/o0HsbOwVCW pic.twitter.com/ixoLGWlX2a
— Catholic League (@CatholicLeague) April 22, 2025

“To allow her to continue to smear Catholicism reflects badly on the Congress.”

He urged both Republican and Democratic lawmakers to unite in censuring Greene for what he termed “bigoted remarks.”

Public figures also reacted to Greene’s post. Clarence Blalock, a Democrat who is preparing for another attempt to challenge Greene in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District in 2026, condemned the comment, calling it “disturbing.”

“Pope Francis deserves better than this,” Blalock said in a post on X.

As of Tuesday, Greene had not responded to the criticism or clarified the intent of her post.

The Trump administration has begun releasing RFK assassination files, sparking renewed interest in the 1968 case.

The Trump administration has begun releasing the first batch of previously classified records relating to the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, providing the public with access to more than 10,000 pages of government files and potentially reigniting debate over the killing that took place nearly six decades ago.

The declassification effort was ordered by President Donald Trump shortly after taking office and is backed by the senator’s son, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The first tranche of files became available online on Friday, with further records expected in the coming months.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who is overseeing the release, said the move reflects the administration’s commitment to transparency.

“Nearly 60 years after the tragic assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the American people will, for the first time, have the opportunity to review the federal government's investigation,” Gabbard said.

Kennedy, the American people will, for the first time, have the opportunity to review the federal government’s investigation thanks to @POTUS leadership and commitment to maximum transparency.… pic.twitter.com/Wvy2fkS9Ai
— DNI Tulsi Gabbard (@DNIGabbard) April 18, 2025

The newly available files have been released in partnership with the National Archives and are being published with limited redactions for privacy reasons.

According to Gabbard, another 50,000 pages of material related to the assassination were found in FBI and CIA storage facilities and will be reviewed and made available in due course.

The assassination of Senator Kennedy occurred in Los Angeles in June 1968 while he was running for president. Sirhan Sirhan was arrested at the scene and later convicted of murder. While Sirhan has admitted to the killing at various times, he has also denied responsibility or claimed memory loss.

His requests for parole have been repeatedly denied, most recently overturned by California Governor Gavin Newsom after a 2021 recommendation by the state’s parole board.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has long questioned the official account of his father’s death. He has voiced support for the declassification process and, in a notable departure from his siblings, advocated for Sirhan’s release during his 2021 parole hearing.

“I’m very grateful,” Kennedy Jr. said regarding the document release.

While much of the original investigation was handled by Los Angeles officials and FBI documents have been publicly available through California archives for years, it remains unclear whether the newly released federal records will provide significant new insight.

Some researchers remain sceptical of the conviction, citing disputed witness accounts and reports of additional bullets at the crime scene, while others maintain that Sirhan acted alone.

The Trump administration’s release of the RFK files follows similar efforts involving the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the 1968 killing of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Whether these newly disclosed documents will shed light on lingering questions or fuel further speculation remains to be seen, but the move marks a significant step in making previously sealed government records accessible to the public.

US may drop push for Russia-Ukraine peace if no progress seen in coming days, Secretary of State Marco Rubio says.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that President Donald Trump will walk away from peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine within days if there are no clear signs of progress.

Speaking in Paris after meetings with European and Ukrainian leaders, Rubio signalled the administration’s growing impatience with the stalled peace process. He stated that Trump remains interested in brokering a deal but will not continue negotiations indefinitely.

“We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end,” Rubio said.

“So we need to determine very quickly now, and I'm talking about a matter of days whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks. If it is, we're in. If it's not, then we have other priorities to focus on as well.”

Trump has long promised to bring a swift end to the conflict. During his election campaign, he claimed he would end the war within 24 hours of taking office. After assuming the presidency, that timeline shifted, with Trump later suggesting a deal could come by April or May.

With no breakthrough in sight, Rubio’s remarks reflect the administration’s frustration over slow diplomatic progress. The comment also highlights a broader challenge as the U.S. attempts to manage multiple geopolitical crises simultaneously.

The Secretary of State’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions with European allies and Ukrainian officials to assess whether a diplomatic path remains viable.

There has been no official response from Moscow or Kyiv to Rubio’s latest comments.

US Senator Chris Van Hollen met Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador after the Supreme Court ordered his return.

US Senator Chris Van Hollen met Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador on Thursday, after the US Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to facilitate Garcia’s return to the United States, highlighting growing tensions between the judiciary and the executive branch.

The Democratic senator from Maryland, where Abrego Garcia had lived, posted an image on X with the 29-year-old, who was deported in what the court deemed an administrative error. The meeting came a day after Van Hollen was denied access to the prison where Garcia had been held.

"I said my main goal of this trip (to El Salvador) was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance," Van Hollen posted, without commenting on Garcia’s condition.

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return. pic.twitter.com/U9y2gZpxCb
— Senator Chris Van Hollen (@ChrisVanHollen) April 18, 2025

He added that he had spoken to Garcia’s wife to pass along a message from him and would share a full update upon returning to the US.

Garcia was deported under an order that the US Supreme Court later found unlawful. Justice Sonia Sotomayor noted that there had been no legal basis for his arrest, deportation, or detention.

Though the Trump administration acknowledged the error, it has not taken steps to return Garcia. Officials have cited a lack of authority to release someone from a foreign prison, raising concerns about potential constitutional defiance.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai repeated the government’s claim—without offering evidence—that Garcia is affiliated with the gang MS-13.

"Chris Van Hollen has firmly established Democrats as the party whose top priority is the welfare of an illegal alien MS-13 terrorist," Desai said in a statement. "President Trump will continue to stand on the side of law-abiding Americans."

Former acting ICE Director Tom Homan also told CNN that Garcia should remain detained. "He's a citizen of El Salvador and he's in El Salvador. He's home," Homan said.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted and is being held in a notorious prison in El Salvador — barred from contacting his family or lawyers.

I’m speaking to the press now after we were denied access to the prison to check on his condition. Tune in: https://t.co/mxEzpYmkwY
— Senator Chris Van Hollen (@ChrisVanHollen) April 17, 2025

In response to the deportation, US District Judge James Boasberg warned administration officials they could face contempt charges, accusing them of "willful disregard" for a March 15 order barring such removals under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act.

Garcia's lawyers deny all allegations of criminal affiliation and say he has never been charged or convicted. They said he left El Salvador at age 16 to escape gang violence and had lived in the US under a protective order since 2019.

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, who met Trump at the White House earlier this week, showed no intent to return Garcia. "Now that he's been confirmed healthy, he gets the honour of staying in El Salvador's custody," Bukele posted on social media following his own meeting with Van Hollen.

The circumstances allowing Van Hollen access to Garcia remain unclear after earlier refusals by Salvadoran officials, including Vice President Felix Ulloa.

Representatives for both Garcia and Van Hollen have not responded to further questions regarding the meeting.

Yields rose as investors pulled back on Fed rate cut bets after Powell’s hawkish remarks reignited inflation concerns.

US Treasuries fell Thursday, snapping a three-day rally, as traders reduced expectations of interest-rate cuts following Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s hawkish remarks on inflation.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year note climbed to 4.30%, erasing much of Wednesday’s gains. Yields across the curve rose, with the five-year yield briefly up six basis points to 3.96%, while the two-year touched 3.82%.

Powell reiterated the central bank’s focus on combating inflation, warning that tariffs could contribute to a longer-lasting rise in prices. “Powell delivered the clearest message since ‘Liberation Day’ yesterday, which was unquestionably hawkish,” ING strategist Francesco Pesole said.

Although Treasuries had initially gained after Powell’s comments, the tone of his message — and a rebound in global risk sentiment from US-Japan trade developments — shifted the focus back to inflation risks.

In a Truth Social post Thursday, President Donald Trump again criticised Powell, saying his “termination can’t come quickly enough” and that the Fed should have already cut rates. The Fed operates independently of the White House.

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/114352766082542122

Money markets are now pricing in around 88 basis points of rate cuts in 2025 — the equivalent of three quarter-point cuts and a 50% chance of a fourth — slightly lower than earlier in the week.

RBC BlueBay Asset Management CIO Mark Dowding said the Fed may feel constrained in taking any near-term action. “The combination of rising prices and stalling growth will probably mean that the Fed feels it can do nothing in terms of monetary policy,” Dowding said, noting Powell’s attention to his legacy.

Dowding added that US inflation could climb to 4% due to tariffs, a trend potentially worsened by a weakening US dollar.

Despite this week’s selloff, some analysts see signs that Treasuries are regaining their traditional role as safe-haven assets. “It’s at least reassuring that Treasuries traded as they ‘should’,” said Michael Brown of Pepperstone.

He cautioned, however, that investor reluctance to hold US assets could still lead to further declines. “Yesterday’s move will at least allay some concerns over the dislocations seen last week,” he said.

Markets now turn to US jobless claims data for the week ending 12 April, expected to show labour market resilience and further guide bond direction.

US shuts down office fighting Russian disinformation, Rubio says it censored Americans and wasted taxpayer funds.

The United States has closed its primary office for countering foreign disinformation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on 16 April, citing free speech concerns and allegations of domestic censorship.

The office, originally launched as the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications, was later restructured as the Global Engagement Center (GEC), before becoming the Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Hub (R/FIMI) in 2024.

In a statement posted on X, Rubio said the office “silenced and censored the voices of Americans” and cost taxpayers more than $50 million annually.

“I am announcing the closure of the State Department’s Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference,” Rubio wrote. “It actively silenced and censored the voices of Americans they were supposed to be serving.”

Today, @SecRubio announced how we're protecting and championing free speech at the State Department. pic.twitter.com/q5v5ZYvdOz
— Department of State (@StateDept) April 16, 2025

The decision comes amid longstanding Republican criticism of the office. Elon Musk, now serving as an adviser to President Donald Trump and heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), previously labelled the GEC “the worst offender in U.S. government censorship.”

Defenders of the GEC rejected those claims. Former Special Envoy James Rubin, who led the office until its closure, said it was focused solely on foreign interference.

During Rubin’s tenure, the office investigated Russian influence campaigns in Latin America, Africa, and Moldova, including a major operation known as the “African Initiative,” which spread conspiracy theories about a U.S.-funded health programme.

“Many, many thousands, if not more, of people might have believed [the disinformation] and not received life-saving medical care,” Rubin told Politico in 2024.

In June last year, the office helped launch the Ukraine Communications Group in Warsaw, a multinational project backed by over 20 governments, NATO, and the European External Action Service, aimed at countering Russian disinformation around the war in Ukraine.

The National Endowment for Democracy estimates that Russia spends roughly $1.5 billion per year on global influence operations. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has said Moscow is responsible for 80% of disinformation efforts across Europe.

During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, U.S. intelligence agencies reported that the Kremlin utilised unsuspecting American citizens and Russian PR firms to amplify falsehoods, according to the Associated Press.

Sen. Van Hollen claims El Salvador VP said the Trump administration is paying to detain Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) revealed during a visit to El Salvador that the country’s vice president told him the Trump administration is financially compensating El Salvador to continue detaining Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia at the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT).

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who had been living legally in Maryland, was mistakenly deported by US officials due to an “administrative error.”

Despite being labelled by the Trump administration as having gang affiliations, he has never been convicted of any gang-related crimes, and both US courts and Salvadoran authorities have found no substantial evidence linking him to MS-13.

Abrego Garcia remains imprisoned at CECOT, a high-security facility designed for terrorists, according to Axios.

On April 16, Van Hollen questioned El Salvador's Vice President Félix Ulloa about the ongoing detention of Abrego Garcia, despite the lack of legal grounds.

Ulloa allegedly responded by stating that the Trump administration is "paying" El Salvador to keep Garcia at CECOT.

"The answer was that the Trump administration is paying the government of El Salvador to keep him at CECOT," Van Hollen said following the meeting.

Van Hollen also expressed concerns over Abrego Garcia’s continued imprisonment, asking why he was still detained despite court rulings and the absence of gang-related evidence.

The senator sought permission to visit Garcia but was informed that such a visit would require prior approval and coordination with the US Embassy.

Van Hollen stated that he would request the US Embassy to formally pursue communication with Garcia, though he acknowledged that access may not be granted.

According to reports, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has told President Trump that Garcia will not be released or returned to the US, despite court orders urging the US government to facilitate his release.

The Department of Justice has stated that, should Garcia return to the US, he would be detained again and face potential deportation.

California has filed a federal lawsuit challenging former US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff plan, alleging he exceeded his legal authority by imposing the duties without congressional approval.

Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the suit on Wednesday, claiming the tariff measures violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The move seeks to block the implementation of Trump's tariffs, which have already triggered economic uncertainty.

"President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy — driving up prices and threatening jobs," Newsom said in a statement.

The legal complaint, filed in federal court, contends that IEEPA does not permit the president to impose tariffs even in a declared economic emergency. “This is the first time a president has attempted to rely on this law to impose tariffs,” Newsom’s office added.

The tariffs, which Trump recently paused for 90 days, have reportedly affected global trade relations. While several nations have entered negotiations, the administration has also escalated duties on Chinese imports — raising them to 145% this week.

Bonta stressed the broader impact, noting California's position as the world’s fifth-largest economy. “Tariffs have very real consequences for Californians across our state,” he said.

Trump has defended his actions under IEEPA, citing national security and economic concerns. However, legal experts and California officials argue the law does not authorise the imposition of trade duties.

“Such expansive action absent congressional approval is a clear violation of the law,” said a statement from Newsom’s office.

The lawsuit now awaits a decision from the federal court on whether the case will proceed to trial. If successful, it could significantly limit the scope of presidential authority in trade matters going forward.

Daniel Berulis, a whistleblower, alleges Russian-linked access to US data via DOGE systems routed through Starlink.

A whistleblower has alleged that DOGE systems linked to Elon Musk’s Starlink network were used by Russian IP addresses to access US government databases, raising fresh concerns over national security and infrastructure exposure.

Daniel Berulis, appearing on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show alongside his lawyer Andrew Bakaj, claimed that DOGE systems were compromised and used by Russian actors to breach US government databases.

According to Berulis, unauthorised access was gained using recently created user credentials tied to Russian IP addresses.

The allegations extend previous revelations made by Berulis regarding DOGE engineers allegedly accessing Mission Launch Readiness Board (MLRB) databases without proper authorisation. “These were indicators of compromise,” Berulis said, referencing a chart he shared during the segment.

Bakaj asserted that DOGE infrastructure was “connected to Starlink,” suggesting a potential conduit to foreign networks. He further claimed that the US Department of Defense had discontinued its use of Starlink due to concerns that the system could serve as a “direct pipeline” to Russia.

The whistleblower's claims included implications that DOGE engineers may have exposed critical infrastructure systems, including those within the US Department of Energy and agencies responsible for nuclear stockpile oversight. “It’s now open to the internet, which means foreign adversaries, like Russia, can and may have access to all of that,” Bakaj warned.

In a related claim, Bakaj said Berulis received a threatening note accompanied by a drone-captured photo of him walking his dog, raising concerns about whistleblower intimidation.

The US government has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.

The full interview with Rachel Maddow, Berulis, and Bakaj is available on MSNBC’s official platforms.

Tasers were deployed and three people arrested as a Georgia town hall hosted by Marjorie Taylor Greene turned chaotic.

A town hall hosted by Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene descended into disorder Tuesday night as police tasered protesters and removed multiple audience members amid heated exchanges over former President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

Two protesters were tasered and three individuals arrested during a chaotic town hall held by hard-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in Acworth, Georgia, on Tuesday evening.

Greene, a vocal ally of Donald Trump, was met with persistent interruptions from audience members questioning the former president’s controversial tariffs and her alleged financial interests. Video footage from the event showed police deploying an electronic non-lethal device to subdue a protester, prompting cheers from parts of the 150-strong crowd.

“This is a town hall. This should not have to happen,” Greene said from the stage as officers intervened. Despite the use of force, no individuals appeared to approach the congresswoman directly.

Acworth police confirmed the arrest of two men aged 40 and 45, and a 28-year-old woman. Sgt Eric Mistretta said officers responded appropriately to individuals who shouted at Greene and resisted removal.

During the event, Greene accused the Democratic Party of orchestrating the disruptions, though she did not present evidence. She labelled critical audience members as “brainwashed” and urged them to leave.

Tensions escalated when Greene dismissed questions about Trump’s tariff policies, denying claims that the measures would increase consumer prices. She also faced scrutiny after a protester held up a sign alleging she had profited from stock purchases linked to last week’s partial pause on tariffs.

In response to questions from reporters after the event, Greene stated that a financial adviser manages her investments and denied direct involvement in recent trades. “He did a great job. He bought the dip,” she said.

The congresswoman has faced criticism in recent weeks, including a separate incident where she told a Sky News reporter to “go back to your country” following a leak involving sensitive text messages on US military action.

Despite internal pressure from congressional leaders to avoid holding public forums, Greene has continued to stage town hall events in her home state.

Vice President JD Vance drops OSU’s national title trophy at White House as Henderson catches falling top.

Vice President of the United Stated JD Vance accidentally dropped part of Ohio State’s national championship football trophy during a White House ceremony on Monday, drawing audible gasps from the crowd and prompting quick reflexes from Buckeyes running back TreVeyon Henderson.

The incident occurred shortly after President Donald Trump, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, and Vance delivered remarks honouring Ohio State’s 2024 college football championship on the South Lawn.

As the vice president, an Ohio State alumnus, attempted to lift the trophy, the golden football-shaped top detached from its black base.

Henderson, standing nearby, caught the top midair while the base hit the ground and rolled. Vance scrambled to retrieve it as players and attendees looked on, some wincing as the Marine Corps Band continued playing “We Are the Champions.”

Henderson and Day helped Vance reassemble the trophy. The vice president then held only the top, cradling it as surrounding players laughed.

Images and video of the fumble spread quickly online. Vance later addressed the moment with humour on social media, writing on X, “I didn't want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it.”

During his speech, Vance had earlier joked about the Buckeyes’ rivalry with Michigan, pointing out an audience member wearing a Michigan hat and telling the crowd, “I’m about to tell the Secret Service, ‘You’ve got a dangerous weapon, sir.’”

Trump praised Ohio State’s title run, referencing the team’s challenges, including a surprising home loss to unranked Michigan in November. “We won’t talk about it,” Trump said, noting the Buckeyes’ fourth consecutive defeat to their rivals.

Social media had a field day with Vance's unfortunate incident, with many users on X (formerly Twitter) trolling the Vice President.

Carnegie Mellon student Jayson Ma’s visa was revoked weeks before graduation with no reason provided by authorities.

Carnegie Mellon University student Jayson Ma, with just one semester remaining in his engineering degree, was informed his US student visa had been revoked without explanation — part of a growing trend affecting international students in the United States.

Seven students and recent graduates from Carnegie Mellon University have recently been informed that their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records have been terminated, leaving them uncertain about their legal status.

One of them, Jayson Ma, originally from China, has lived in the US since 2016.

"I only have a semester left," said Ma, who is pursuing a degree in electrical and computer engineering. "There’s only three weeks left for the semester. We have finals coming up. So, with everything going on, it's kind of hard to process."

Ma said he received a phone call from his designated school official alerting him to the revocation. He added that no official reason was provided by US authorities and no termination notice has been issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Ma’s attorney, Joseph Murphy, believes the revocation may be connected to a 2023 driving under the influence case. However, Murphy noted that the case was dismissed and expunged after Ma completed Pennsylvania’s Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) programme.

“This is someone who chose to stay and finish his degree despite his mother battling terminal cancer back in China,” Murphy said. "It’s a significant emotional and financial investment to be told this close to the finish line that it may not matter."

Ma said his visa had been valid through spring 2026 and he was on track to graduate by December. Despite the revocation, CMU has allowed him to continue attending classes.

“Am I intentionally breaking the law by staying to finish school, or do I have to leave and sacrifice everything I’ve worked for?” Ma said.

He now carries his passport and essential documents at all times in case he is required to leave the country suddenly.

Other universities in Pennsylvania have reported similar cases. The University of Pittsburgh confirmed at least three international students — one current and two recent graduates — have had their visas revoked. Penn State acknowledged that some students have also been affected but did not disclose numbers.

Both institutions said they are offering legal support and mental health services, while advising students to carry identification and relevant immigration documents at all times.

“We are in regular contact with international scholars, providing updated information and travel guidance,” a University of Pittsburgh spokesperson said.

Penn State stated that affected students are being supported through counselling services and may be offered online alternatives via Penn State World Campus.

Legal experts say these visa terminations are often linked to minor or expunged legal infractions. The sudden nature of the revocations — often without detailed explanation — has left students and universities scrambling for clarity.

As Ma continues his studies under uncertain conditions, his attorney says they are awaiting formal communication from federal immigration authorities. "This could be a red herring," Murphy said. "We just don’t know yet."

US commander removed from Greenland base following reported email distancing staff from VP JD Vance's remarks.

The United States military has dismissed the commander of its Pituffik Space Base in Greenland following a reported internal email distancing the installation from remarks made by Vice President JD Vance during a recent visit.

Colonel Susannah Meyers, who led the 821st Space Base Group at Pituffik, was removed due to a "loss of confidence in her ability to lead," according to a statement posted on X by Sean Parnell, chief Pentagon spokesperson.

The post included a link to a report by Military.com, which first disclosed the contents of the alleged email.

Actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump's agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.

⬇️⬇️ https://t.co/ITFeGw0kUf pic.twitter.com/MO68aje1X2
— Sean Parnell (@SeanParnellATSD) April 11, 2025

According to the outlet, Meyers emailed staff on March 31 asserting that Vance’s statements about Denmark’s handling of Greenland did not represent the leadership at Pituffik.

The email, reportedly confirmed by the US Space Force but not obtained by Newsweek, stated: "The concerns of the US administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base."

Vice President Vance, accompanied by second lady Usha Vance, visited the base on 28 March.

In a press conference during the visit, Vance criticised Denmark for what he described as underinvestment in Greenland’s security and welfare. “You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” he said. “You have underinvested in the security of this incredible, beautiful landmass.”

Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, has drawn renewed attention from Washington during Donald Trump’s second term in office, particularly in light of the administration's stated interest in asserting control over the territory. President Trump has not ruled out the use of military force to achieve that aim.

Following Vance’s comments, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen publicly criticised the tone of the remarks. “This is not how you speak to your close allies,” Rasmussen said in a video address.

Meyers’ dismissal prompted further comment from the Department of Defense. “Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties,” a spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

Parnell added in his post that “actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”

Colonel Shawn Lee has been appointed as Meyers’ replacement, according to a press release from the US Space Force.

The future of US involvement in Greenland remains uncertain. A January opinion poll indicated that 85 percent of Greenlanders oppose American annexation.

GOP Rep. Don Bacon calls for restoring tariff authority to Congress as Trump’s trade policies face scrutiny.

Republican lawmakers are increasingly questioning former President Donald Trump’s broad tariff authority, with Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon suggesting Congress reclaim control over trade policy.

Bacon told CNN on Thursday that Congress “made a mistake” in previously granting the president temporary tariff powers, arguing that such economic decisions should be legislative matters.

“Tariffs should be a Congressional-initiated action,” Bacon said. “I think we should look back and maybe restore the power back to Congress.”

GOP Rep. Bacon: "We made a mistake. We passed legislation that gave the president some temporary tariff authorities. I think we should look back and maybe restore the power back from Congress and take away the authorizations."
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-03-27T15:50:54.925Z

His comments come as tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports are set to take effect next week, alongside a newly announced 25% duty on foreign-made vehicles. Some GOP lawmakers fear the policy could lead to sharp price increases on consumer goods, triggering voter backlash.

North Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman acknowledged the economic strain but expressed cautious optimism about Trump’s approach. He told CNN the auto tariffs would be “painful” for American consumers but said he would “leave that up to [Trump].”

Phill Swagel, head of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, also warned of short-term consequences. Speaking to CNBC, Swagel said the tariffs would “reduce the efficiency of the economy” and “boost the price level,” though he did not expect sustained inflation.

Despite concerns, some Republicans remain supportive of Trump’s trade strategy. Indiana Rep. Marlin Stutzman told NewsNation that while tariffs introduce uncertainty, they could strengthen U.S. negotiating leverage.

“There’s some uncertainty,” Stutzman said. “But my hope is that these other countries will realize that they need us as a partner… We knew it was going to be a little rocky.”

As trade tensions escalate, calls to rein in presidential tariff authority may gain traction in Congress, setting up a potential policy shift within the Republican Party.

Elon Musk privately urged Reddit CEO Steve Huffman to act against subreddits restricting X links and posts targeting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employees, according to The Verge.

The messages came after Musk publicly criticised Reddit on X, calling it “insane” that certain subreddits blocked links to his platform. He also claimed that Reddit users advocating violence against DOGE staff had “broken the law.”

Shortly after their exchange, Reddit imposed a 72-hour ban on the WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit, citing a “prevalence of violent content.” The thread Musk highlighted on X was also deleted, along with hundreds of comments, including those that did not promote violence.

Reddit spokesperson Gina Antonini stated: “We take any report of Reddit policy violations seriously, whether on Reddit directly or through other public or private means. We will evaluate content reported to us and take action if violating.” Musk did not respond to the Verge's requests for comment.

The revelation of Musk’s private outreach quickly spread among Reddit moderators, who discussed it in a Discord chat. Screenshots from the conversation show some expressing frustration over Musk’s influence.

“He should not be able to influence Reddit, but if what he calls out is death threats, then of course they need to come down,” one moderator wrote. Others voiced concerns over his ability to pressure both public and private platforms.

Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has previously restricted links to competing social media sites, including a ban on certain external URLs last month.

While Reddit has not yet intervened in moderator-led decisions to block X links, the incident raises questions about external influence on content moderation policies.

Minnesota sues Trump’s EPA for freezing green bank funds, calling it an illegal climate policy rollback.

Minnesota has taken legal action against the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Citibank, arguing that the federal government unlawfully froze $25 million in green energy funding.

The lawsuit, led by Attorney General Keith Ellison, is part of a broader legal battle over the Trump administration’s decision to halt climate-related spending.

At the centre of the dispute is the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a $20 billion programme established under the Inflation Reduction Act to support green banks—institutions that finance clean energy projects.

Minnesota’s state-run green bank had planned to use its share of the funds for initiatives such as geothermal heating in public housing and solar panel installations in schools.

However, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin halted the programme in March, calling it a “gold bar scheme” and alleging that billions in taxpayer dollars had been placed in outside financial institutions with limited oversight.

The claim was based, in part, on a hidden-camera video from the conservative group Project Veritas, in which an EPA employee described efforts to distribute grant money before Trump took office as “throwing gold bars off the Titanic.”

Minnesota’s lawsuit argues that the EPA’s actions violate the Administrative Procedures Act and the Impoundment Control Act, which prevent federal agencies from withholding congressionally approved funds.

A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking the EPA from withdrawing the money, but a final decision remains uncertain.

With $5 billion in loan requests already submitted to Minnesota’s green bank, the outcome of this case could determine the future of state-led clean energy projects.

As legal proceedings continue, the dispute highlights the broader clash between the Biden administration’s climate policies and the Trump administration’s push to roll them back.

Gavin Newsom said allowing transgender women in female sports is "deeply unfair," breaking from many Democrats.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has said it is “deeply unfair” to allow transgender women and girls to compete in female sports, marking a shift from many elected Democrats.

Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, made the remarks on his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom, during a discussion with conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom said. “It is an issue of fairness, it’s deeply unfair. We’ve got to own that. We’ve got to acknowledge it.”

His comments come as Democrats debate the role of cultural issues in their defeat in November’s elections, when Republicans secured the White House and both chambers of Congress.

A number of Democrats criticised Newsom’s remarks.

“We woke up profoundly sickened and frustrated by these remarks,” California’s LGBT legislative caucus said in a statement.

Our Chair and Vice Chair released the following statement on Governor Gavin Newsom’s anti-transgender remarks: pic.twitter.com/J0VxvXSQrr
— California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus (@calgbt) March 6, 2025

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the comments “disgusting,” while Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said the party should not “take the bait and give into their anti-trans people rhetoric.”

Senator Sasha Renee Perez also criticised Newsom's stance, stating that "trans women athletes who represent 10 of 510,000 college athletes in the USA."

Shocked Gov. Newsom would join the obsession with trans women athletes who represent 10 of 510,000 college athletes in the USA. Republican solutions to ‘regulate’ this include having coaches monitor children’s menstrual cycles or performing genital exams. Stay away from our kids. https://t.co/QpxlD12BhV
— Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (@SashaReneePerez) March 7, 2025

However, some Democrats agreed with Newsom’s stance.

Seth Moulton, a moderate Democrat from Massachusetts, told Politico that Newsom was “correct, and polling shows it.” A January survey by The New York Times/Ipsos found that nearly 70% of Democrats and almost all Republicans opposed allowing transgender female athletes to compete in women’s sports.

Newsom, who has been a strong advocate for LGBT rights throughout his career, previously positioned himself to the left of his party on these issues. As San Francisco mayor in 2004, he ordered the city to issue same-sex marriage licences despite state and federal restrictions at the time.

As governor, he signed legislation making California the first sanctuary state for transgender youth and banned school districts from requiring staff to notify parents if a child changed gender identity.

During the podcast, Newsom also acknowledged broader political challenges for his party, referring to a viral Trump campaign ad with the tagline: “Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you.”

“It was devastating,” he said. “And she didn’t even react to it, which was even more devastating.”

Kirk argued that Democrats are out of touch with everyday voters due to their broad support for transgender athletes in sports.

“I revere sports,” Newsom responded. “So, the issue of fairness is completely legit.”

Florida sues Trinity Health Care, claiming $5M overpayment funded CEO's congressional campaign amid ethics complaints.

Florida has filed a lawsuit against Trinity Health Care Services, alleging the company knowingly accepted over $5 million in accidental overpayments and used the funds, in part, to support a congressional campaign.

The lawsuit, filed in Leon Circuit Civil Court, accuses Trinity of exploiting emergency conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic to retain funds far exceeding the intended payment.

In June 2021, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) contracted Trinity to assist with COVID-19 vaccination registration.

The agency mistakenly transferred $5,057,850.00 instead of the intended $50,578.50, a hundredfold overpayment. Despite the apparent error, Trinity did not return the funds. Additional overpayments during the period brought the total amount to over $5.7 million, according to state records.

The situation resurfaced in 2024 when FDEM formally demanded repayment. The lawsuit alleges that Trinity, under the leadership of then-CEO Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, knowingly processed the inflated payments and failed to return them. The state claims this occurred during a national state of emergency, exacerbating the issue.

Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who served as Trinity’s CEO at the time, later ran for and won a seat in Congress. Florida officials now allege that a portion of the overpaid funds was used to finance her 2021 congressional campaign.

The Office of Congressional Ethics has also released a report detailing allegations of campaign finance violations against Cherfilus-McCormick. The report claims her campaign committee accepted unreported contributions exceeding legal limits and failed to disclose transactions between the campaign committee’s and her business’s bank accounts.

While Cherfilus-McCormick currently faces unrelated ethics complaints, the lawsuit adds further scrutiny to her tenure at Trinity. Florida’s legal filing asserts that Trinity exploited the emergency conditions of the pandemic to retain funds it was not entitled to.

Trinity’s current CEO, Edwin Cherfilus, has declined to comment on the lawsuit or the allegations against the company.

Florida is seeking full repayment of the overpaid funds as the case unfolds. Meanwhile, Cherfilus-McCormick’s political career faces heightened scrutiny over fresh legal and ethical allegations.

For second time in US history, woman after Hillary Clinton has run as president nominee and has lost

Kamala Harris’s defeat in the 2024 US presidential election, following her loss to Donald Trump, represents a significant setback for women in American politics, according to Factbox.

For the second time in US history, a woman has run as the nominee of a major party for president—and, for the second time, she has lost.

Harris, who had made history as the first woman and first woman of colour to serve as vice president, was unable to overcome Trump’s Republican campaign, despite a concerted effort to unite voters around issues such as economic recovery and reproductive rights.

Her defeat mirrors the historic loss of Hillary Clinton in 2016, who, despite winning the popular vote, was defeated by Trump in the Electoral College.

Harris conceded the 2024 US presidential race on Wednesday at Howard University, delivering an address to supporters.

She congratulated President-elect Donald Trump and affirmed her commitment to a peaceful transition, adding a poignant reminder of the importance of democracy’s core principles.

Factors behind Harris’ loss

The reasons for Harris’s loss are complex.

An Edison Research exit poll revealed that voter concerns about the state of the economy and financial security were central to the election results.

In addition, an October Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that 55% of voters believed sexism remained a significant problem in US politics, with 15% of those surveyed saying they would not feel comfortable voting for a female president.

These attitudes are compounded by the challenge women face in closing the gender gap in pay and political representation.

Despite these obstacles, Harris’s candidacy highlighted the increasing political participation of women and people of color in US politics.

In the 2022-24 US Congress, women made up 28% of the total membership, and women of color now comprise over a third of female lawmakers.

However, the path to the presidency remains elusive for women, with every US president to date being male.

Sexism and Challenges for Female Political Leaders

The political landscape for women in the US continues to be shaped by systemic challenges.

Although women represent 51% of the US population, they still lag behind men in terms of political representation and pay. Women in leadership positions across both public and private sectors remain underrepresented.

In 2023, women earned 84 cents for every dollar earned by men, with women of color facing an even larger wage gap.

Kamala Harris’s loss underscores the difficulties women continue to face in breaking through the highest levels of political office.

If elected, Harris would have been the first woman president and the first woman of color to occupy the White House.

The Road Ahead for Women in Politics

While the loss is a blow to those advocating for gender equality in US politics, it also reflects the ongoing struggles women face in overcoming both overt and subtle biases.

The path forward for women in politics remains uncertain, but Harris’s campaign has brought important issues such as economic inequality, reproductive rights, and racial justice to the forefront.

Barack Hussein Obama stands as the sole exception in US history, being the only non-white male elected to the country’s highest office in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.

Harris’s place in history as the first woman vice president marks a pivotal moment in US politics.

Similarly, Hillary Clinton’s role as the first woman to run for president on a major party ticket laid the groundwork for future female candidates.

As the nation reflects on Harris’s loss, many hope that it will not mark the end of women’s pursuit of the presidency.

The book is Bolton's portrait of 17 months up close with Trump, until he was ousted in September

A US judge refused Saturday to block the release of a tell-all book in which President Donald Trump's former national security advisor describes him as corrupt and incompetent.

With the book already shipped to stores for sale next week, Judge Royce Lambert wrote that John Bolton appeared to have failed to get written White House agreement that his memoir contained nothing classified.

"While Bolton's unilateral conduct raises grave national security concerns, the government has not established that an injunction is an appropriate remedy," the judge wrote.

The judge said a review of passages that the government contends contain classified material has persuaded him that Bolton "likely jeopardised national security through publication."

Pompeo slams ‘lies’ by ‘traitor’ Bolton over White House tell-all book

The book, entitled "The Room Where it Happened," has been widely shipped to bookstores for publication Tuesday and many of its most damning allegations against Trump have been reported in the media.

It is Bolton's portrait of 17 months up close with Trump, until he was ousted in September.

The picture -- which Trump characterizes as "fiction" -- is ugly.

According to Bolton, a lifelong Republican who stands firmly on the right of the party, Trump is not "fit for office."

Social media companies are under pressure to police their platforms in the run-up to the 2020 election

US Democratic presidential contender Elizabeth Warren went after big tech during the Democratic debate on Tuesday but brushed off rival Kamala Harris’s challenge to join her in calling for President Donald Trump’s suspension from Twitter.

Warren, a US senator who is in a virtual tie with former Vice President Joe Biden in many opinion polls in the Democratic race, argued for her proposal to split up major tech firms such as Facebook, Alphabet and Amazon over antitrust concerns, in what was the most wide-ranging discussion of big tech in the Democratic debates to date.

“I’m not willing to give up and let a handful of monopolists dominate our economy and our democracy. It’s time to fight back,” Warren said in the debate in Westerville, Ohio.

Facebook launches tool to let users control data flow

But she did not engage with the request by Harris, also a US senator, that she join her in calling for Twitter to suspend Trump’s account. Harris has argued that Trump uses the platform to intimidate his opponents and threaten violence.

“It is a matter of safety and corporate accountability,” Harris pushed, while Warren refused to engage, instead saying she was focused on beating Trump in the November 2020 election.

“I don’t just want to push Donald Trump off Twitter. I want to push him out of the White House. That’s our job,” Warren responded.

Warren, who said on Tuesday she would not accept campaign contributions of more than $200 from executives at large tech companies or big banks, then pivoted to focus on whether candidates were taking money from big tech.

Social media companies, which are under pressure to police their platforms in the run-up to the 2020 election, have most recently been attacked by Democratic candidates, including Warren and Biden, for allowing politicians to run ads with false or misleading claims on their platforms.

This month, leaked audio from an internal Facebook meeting in July disclosed Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg telling staff they would “go to the mat” to defeat Warren’s expected effort to break up the company if she is elected president.

The other Democrats on stage did not explicitly endorse Warren’s plan to split up the major tech firms but voiced concerns about competition.

Facebook exempts political speech from fact-checking

US Senator Bernie Sanders, another longtime critic of big tech firms and corporate influence, said the United States needed a president with “the guts to appoint an attorney general who will take on these huge monopolies.”

Former US Representative Beto O’Rourke said he would be “unafraid to break up big businesses” but that he did not think it was the president’s role to designate which companies should be broken up.

The charges add a new twist in the sprawling investigations into Moscow's meddling in US politics

An American who was dating jailed alleged Russian agent Maria Butina was charged with fraud on Tuesday, adding a new twist in the sprawling investigations into Moscow's meddling in US politics.

Republican and National Rifle Association operative Paul Erickson was charged with one count of fraud for cheating investors in companies he controlled that purported to be running assisted living facilities and building homes in North Dakota.

He also allegedly cheated investors in a wheelchair design and production company, according to the indictment.

In all three cases, he took hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors and used some of it for his personal needs, the indictment said.

US charges against Russian Butina ‘unfounded’: Kremlin

In addition, he was charged with seven accounts of money laundering for transfers he made using the fraudulently raised funds.

Erickson opened the door to conservative circles for Butina, who built a network of high-level Republican and NRA contacts between 2013 and 2017 before her arrest last year.

With her, he arranged for a high-level delegation from the NRA to visit Russia in December 2015, where they met with senior Russian officials.

That visit has come under scrutiny in investigations into possible collusion between President Donald Trump's election campaign and Russia.

In Washington, Erickson helped Butina gain admission to American University's graduate school and they lived together while she studied and wove her way through Washington's Republican circles.

According to the charges against her and her guilty plea last December, Butina worked for powerful Russian central banker and Vladimir Putin crony Alexander Torshin on an explicit mission to "establish unofficial lines of communications with Americans who having power and influence over US politics."

"Butina sought to use those unofficial lines of communication for the benefit of the Russian Federation," the Justice Department said.

US-Russia treaty under strain

Meanwhile, based on the Russian connections he made through Butina, in 2016 Erickson offered to set up contacts between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

According to US media reports, those actions have raised the possibility that he could be charged with illegally acting as an agent for Moscow, and with conspiracy for his work with Butina.

The indictment Wednesday made no direct mention of his relationship to Butina, who is in jail awaiting sentencing.

But there were hints of a connection: money transfers to American University, and to "M.B.", which could be her initials.

Trump’s biggest celebrity supporter also distanced from campaign encouraging black Americans to quit Democratic Party

Three weeks after a bizarre White House meeting with US President Donald Trump, rapper Kanye West said on Tuesday he was distancing himself from politics.

West, Trump’s biggest celebrity supporter, also sought to distance himself from a new campaign that encourages black Americans to quit the Democratic Party.

[caption id="attachment_1815129" align="alignnone" width="625"] PHOTO: CONSEQUENCES OF SOUND[/caption]

“My eyes are now wide open and now realise I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in. I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative!!!” West tweeted, without mentioning Trump, who is a Republican, or any other names.

https://twitter.com/kanyewest/status/1057382916760707072

The singer and fashion designer, who has said he is bipolar, also said he “never wanted any association” with a campaign launched last weekend called Blexit that seeks to draw African-Americans away from their long-standing support for Democrats.

West, 41, was linked to the campaign after its leader, conservative activist Candace Owens, said he had designed the logo for the movement’s hats and T-shirts.

“I introduced Candace to the person who made the logo and they didn’t want their name on it so she used mine,” West tweeted on Tuesday. “I have nothing to do with it.”

West posted his comments just a week before US congressional elections on November 6 and after months of erratic behavior, including describing slavery as a choice.

On October 11, he met Trump in the Oval Office and launched into a rambling 10-minute-long speech carried live on television in which he said Trump made him feel like a superhero, and referenced the existence of an alternate universe.

56-year-old former president is scheduled to attend campaign rallies in New Jersey, Virginia

Barack Obama is returning to the political arena for the first time in months after keeping a low profile and avoiding direct confrontation with his White House successor.

The 56-year-old former president is scheduled to attend campaign rallies in New Jersey and Virginia on Thursday to support Democratic party candidates for governor.

Voters in both states will decide the gubernatorial contests on November 7, one year after Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton and stormed into the White House on a wave of anti-establishment fury.

Obama makes impassioned plea for clean energy in Argentina

The races are a potential indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, which will be a major test for Trump and his Republican party.

"There are only two big elections this year, for governor in NJ and VA," political science professor Larry Sabato told AFP. "What's at stake is bragging rights headed into the 2018 midterm elections."

It is unclear what Obama's message will be. The former US leader has remained largely detached from the political debate since leaving office on January 20, in keeping with presidential tradition.

Trump has meanwhile used his first nine months in the White House to methodically demolish key Obama administration policies.

After three months of vacation Obama began writing his memoirs. He has said little in public and granted almost no interviews. The few times Obama broke his silence was to comment on issues of national importance, such as immigration, health care and climate change.

But the 44th president may be tempted on Thursday to take aim at Trump, who has frequently and publicly excoriated his predecessor.

In New Jersey, the post of governor will almost certainly go to Democrat Philip Murphy, who would succeed Chris Christie, a Trump ally whose popularity has plummeted to record lows. New Jersey "is a runaway win for the Democrats, so Virginia is the only competitive contest.

Obama personally warned Zuckerberg over fake news

Obama is needed much more in Richmond than Trenton," said Sabato, referring to the capitals of the two states.

Virginia is a pivotal state and the only southern US state that Clinton won in 2016. Its importance is amplified by its proximity to the US capital.

"If the GOP loses in Virginia, Trump will be widely blamed since he is so unpopular in a state carried by Hillary Clinton," Sabato said. "Should the Republicans win Virginia's governorship, then Trump will not be viewed as such a liability for the GOP in 2018."

In Richmond, Obama will back Ralph Northam, a former military doctor who was credited Wednesday with a slight lead over Republican Ed Gillespie in a Quinnipiac poll.

Obama's impending arrival in the city of over 220,000 people sparked long lines of people seeking tickets to the campaign event.

Well aware of the importance of the vote, Trump has backed Gillespie and accused Northam of "fighting for the violent MS-13," a Hispanic gang, as well as "sanctuary cities" that offer shelter to illegal immigrants.

Gillespie, a former advisor to president George W. Bush who has become a millionaire lobbyist, has so far kept a cautious distance from the mercurial Trump, whose backing recently failed to ensure the election of his pick in a Republican Senate race in Alabama.

Case pertains to a meeting held between Clinton and former AG Loretta Lynch

Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) has reopened a case against former US president Bill Clinton after Donald Trump’s lawyer requested the same from the agency.

The case pertains to a meeting held between Clinton and former attorney general Loretta Lynch that Trump alleged was to influence an investigation taking place about his rival’s use of a private email server.

The request to the FBI to reopen the case was made by American Centre for Law and Justice (ACLJ) and push for the documents relating to the mentioned meeting. Jay Sekulow, one of the members from Trump’s legal team, is the chief counsel at ACLJ.

“While we appreciate that the FBI has ‘reopened’ the case file and is now ‘searching’ for documents responsive to our duly submitted FOIA request from more than a year ago, it stretches the bounds of credulity to suggest that the FBI bureaucracy just discovered that ‘potentially responsive’ records ‘may exist’ on its own accord,” Sekulow has said.

He was upgraded to fair condition and moved out of the ICU after undergoing multiple rounds of surgery

Top US Republican lawmaker Steve Scalise, recovering from being shot by a gunman angry about President Donald Trump, has been moved back into intensive care because of concerns over infection, doctors said on Wednesday.

Gunman who shot Republicans was Sanders fan, had run-ins with law

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said the lawmaker is now listed in serious condition. Scalise and three other people were shot in mid June at a park in suburban Washington as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game.

The 51-year-old from Louisiana was hit in the left hip by a bullet from a high-velocity rifle. The round fragmented into hundreds of pieces and tore apart bones, internal organs and blood vessels.

Anxious for win, Trump and Republicans revive health care push

Scalise, the number three Republican in the House of Representatives, arrived at the hospital in a critical state, facing "an imminent risk of death," according to doctors.

After undergoing multiple rounds of surgery he was upgraded to fair condition and moved out of the ICU in late June. The gunman, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, was shot and killed by responding officers.

The Trump International Hotel has become a rallying point for anti-Trump protesters since it opened in September

Donald Trump Jr has taken the reins of the Trump International Hotel near the White House after critics charged it was a conflict of interest for US President Donald Trump to run the hotel while also running the federal government that is leasing the building to his company.
A filing with the District of Columbia government last week showed that the younger Trump took over as president of the company that runs the luxury hotel as well as a restaurant and spa in the building.

The filing left unresolved a controversy about Trump's leasing the Old Post Office, the historic government building that houses the hotel. Democrats have criticised the lease as a conflict of interest, and the agreement also has come under scrutiny from Representative Jason Chaffetz, the Utah Republican who heads the House of Representatives' Oversight Committee.
Chaffetz met Trump at the White House on Tuesday, and a spokesperson for Chaffetz said they spoke about the lawmaker's reform agenda, including civil service and postal reforms.
Democratic lawmakers have said conflict-of-interest laws prohibit Trump, as president, from being both landlord and tenant of the hotel a few blocks from the White House.
They have asked the General Services Administration, which oversees federal property, to clarify the status of the lease arrangement.
The agency did not respond to a request for comment, but a spokesperson for Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, said the GSA has told the lawmaker it was still evaluating whether Trump was in violation of the lease.

The hotel lease held by Trump Old Post Office LLC includes a standard provision barring members of Congress or other elected federal officials such as the president from having any part of it. Trump is the company's majority owner.
The Trump International Hotel has become a rallying point for anti-Trump protesters since it opened in September. Trump said last month he would keep ownership of his global business empire but hand over control to his two eldest sons, Donald Jr and Eric.
Watchdogs have said the arrangement would not prevent conflicts of interest in the White House.
