Demise on duty: Second Punjab governor to die in office

Salmaan Taseer is the second governor of Punjab to have died during his tenure in the history of the province.

LAHORE: Salmaan Taseer is the second governor of Punjab to have died during his tenure in the history of the province.

The first governor who died while serving as governor was Chaudhry Muhammad Altaf Hussain who served twice during the 1990s. Both of them belonged to the Pakistan Peoples Party. Hussain had died of cardiac arrest at the Punjab Governor House while in office in May 1995.

Hussain was buried in his native town of Jhelum after funeral prayers were held at the official residence.

According to Article 101 of the Constitution, the president nominates the governor who stays in office until the president notifies otherwise. If, due to absence from the country or for any other cause, the governor is unable to perform his duties, the speaker of the province or any nominee of the president, shall perform the functions until the governor returns.
