ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan gave police 10 days on Tuesday to complete their investigation of an accident during a drag race in Rawalpindi that resulted in the death of five people.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard a suo motu case and expressed dissatisfaction over the report submitted by Advocate General of Punjab Khawaja Harris. The report said that City Police Officer Rawalpindi has been made Officer on Special Duty, which is a kind of punishment for police officials not trusted with a responsibility.
The court blamed the police for failing to arrest Ali Riaz (of Bahria Town), Sheikh Atif (organiser) and Waleed Aman (co-organiser) and directed them to “immediately arrest” the suspects.
Justice Chaudhry also directed Hamid Mukhtar Gondal, RPO Rawalpindi, to submit a “comprehensive investigation report on the incident” to the court.
On December 5, five spectators of a drag race that took place in Phase VIII of Bahria Town were killed when one of the cars skidded off the road and ran them over. Muhammad Majid Khan, reportedly a senior manager of a national telecom giant, was driving the car. Khan is currently in police custody after he withdrew his bail application.
