KARACHI:

At least five persons, including candidates contesting the local government elections, were arrested by law enforcement agencies following a firing incident near Tando Bago. All of them were released after a few hours.

The rally of former Sindh home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza came under attack allegedly by workers of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), around four kilometres from Tando Bago.

Following the incident, the PPP leadership, including MNA Kamal Khan Chang, who is the party's district president, Dr Abdul Aziz Memon and PPP MPA Dr Lal Chand Ukrani, said that the law enforcement agencies have arrested six party workers. The PPP leaders, during a press conference at Chang House in Badin, alleged that the supporters of the Mirza group opened fire on PPP workers while Rangers arrested PPP activists.

Allegations: Zulfiqar Mirza blames Zardari for Khairpur killings

On the other hand, Dr Fehmida Mirza, the wife of Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, and MNA from the area, alleged that PPP workers opened fire on the rally when it crossed a petrol pump. "It is a suspicious firing incident," said Badin SSP Abrar Hussain Nekokar. "We have to investigate it thoroughly." He added that both the sides accused each other of starting the firing.
