KARACHI: Two police officials were shot dead near Char Minar within the limits of the New Town police station on Thursday. The unknown miscreants managed to escape after killing the cops.

Both officials, head constable Abdul Ghafar and Pervaiz, were posted at the New Town police station and were on their routine patrol when the incident occurred. They succumbed to their injuries on the spot.

The police recovered seven empty bullet casings from the crime scene and have initiated an investigation into the incident.  Earlier, traffic policemen were being targeted in the city. According to police officials, 70 police personnel have been targeted in Karachi this year so far.

Taking notice of the killings, Sindh home minister Sohail Anwar Siyal has asked the traffic AIG and DIG to submit a report on the incident. In a statement, he said that the operation will continue against terrorists, adding that such incidents can't demoralise law enforcement agencies.

The minister has announced jobs in the police department for the family members of the deceased, assuring that the families will also receive salaries and other benefits.

Traffic policeman found dead

A traffic policeman, identified as Rehan Sarwar, 45, was found dead from his home in Aram Bagh on Thursday. The cause of the killing has yet to be ascertained, said the police. The body was shifted to Civil hospital.
