ISLAMABAD:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has challenged in Supreme Court the Lahore High Court’s order banning live speeches of its chief Altaf Hussain on TV channels.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on September 7 had banned the live broadcast of Altaf Hussain’s speeches and images. It also directed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and additional attorney-general to implement the ban across all electronic and print media.

Asma Jahangir along with three senior attorneys has filed the appeal on behalf of MQM leaders Altaf Hussain and Farooq Sattar. The petition said restricting Altaf Hussain’s speeches is against the Fundamental Rights and the constitution of Pakistan.

It prayed to the apex court to suspend the high court order on the basis that it was passed without first deciding the question of maintainability of writ petition.

“Can the court pass directions to the Pemra without giving the authority an opportunity to hear the complaint of the petitioners,” it said.
