KOHAT/PARACHINAR: Kohat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zahir Shah Mohmand appealed to the clerics and religious scholars of all schools of thought, including Shias and Sunnis, to help secure peace during the month of Muharram.

The DC held separate meetings with the Sunni and Shia jirgas on Friday where participants from both sects gave several suggestions to secure peace in the region. They also assured their complete cooperation on the occasion, and that they will work hard to ensure people remain safe while practising the rituals in Muharram.

Mohmand asked the scholars to spread messages of peace, brotherhood, unity, tolerance and national integrity and pleaded with them to avoid provocative sermons that may lead to violence and disturbance in the region. He also asked officials of security organisations to ensure the law and order, and keep a strict check on any emerging notorious elements during the month. An official of the district administration said Kohat district nazim Maulana Niaz Muhammad, Kohat DPO Sohaib Ashraf and several others were also present at the meetings.

Moreover, in efforts to prepare for the month of Muharram, the Pakistan Army and security forces have tightened security arrangements across Kurram Agency.

Commander Brigadier Muhammad Ali said a shuttle service will also be offered to transport people to Parachinar. A Crisis Management Cell and Control Room is also being established in the region to assist people should any untoward incident might happen.

“People should avoid saying things that might aggravate tension or harm the sentiments of the opposing sect,” Ali said.
