Committee to decide agenda for 11th PUIC summit in Iraq

ISLAMABAD: The lower house of parliament will be hosting this year’s meeting of the executive committee of the Parliamentary Union of Islamic Countries (PUIC) in Islamabad. The two-day 34th meeting shall be inaugurated by Murtaza Javed Abbasi, the acting speaker of the National Assembly, on Monday.

MPs from Pakistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Chad, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Iraq and Iran will be attending the meeting. The executive committee shall discuss and finalise the agenda for the 11th PUIC conference scheduled to be held in the Iraqi capital Baghdad in 2016.

The body will also mull over the draft charter of the PUIC on combating terrorism and extremism (which was drawn up by the PUIC working group), besides outlining agendas for specialised PUIC standing committees on political and foreign affairs, environment, human rights, women and family affairs, culture, legal affairs and dialogue of civilisations and religions.

The delegates shall also propose ways and means to strengthen inter-parliamentary relationship among Islamic countries and the political, economic and development challenges faced by the Islamic world. The executive committee will conclude the meeting on Tuesday with adoption of its report and the Islamabad Declaration.
