PESHAWAR/ LOWER DIR: It seems the monsoon is in no mood to vacate Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s airspace any time soon. At least three children were killed while nine others were injured when roofs of houses collapsed in Peshawar and Timergara after heavy downpour lashed the region once again on Thursday.

Casualties

In Peshawar, a seven-year-old girl died while two of her sisters were injured when the wall of their house collapsed in Dheri Baghbanan.

A police office said the house belongs to Wasil Khan. “A wall of the house collapsed and three sisters were trapped under the debris.” Locals pulled them out and rushed them to Lady Reading Hospital where one of the girls, Sana, was pronounced dead. “Her sisters, Malaika and Kainat, were injured.” Separately, four others were injured in various rain-related incidents in the city.

On the other hand, two children were killed and three others were injured when the roof of their house in Damtal area of Kambat, Lower Dir caved in. The deceased and injured belong to the same family. The injured were rushed to a hospital soon after they were rescued from the debris.

No respite

Furthermore, a whirlwind was also reported to have crossed the city, disrupting domestic and international flights scheduled at Bacha Khan International Airport.

An official of the Civil Aviation Authority said flights of Pakistan International Airlines and three other private carriers were delayed due to the winds. Rainfall also resulted in power breakdowns in most areas of the city.

“We had predicted the rain and the strong winds that followed it,” Pakistan Meteorological Department Peshawar Regional Director Mushtaq Shah told The Express Tribune. “The interaction between cold and hot weather systems on the border areas of Peshawar and Afghanistan caused the showers.”

He added they recorded 15 millimetres of rainfall in the city with a wind speed of about 18 to 20 knots. The department has predicted more rain in Peshawar, Kohat, Malakand and Hazara over the next 24 hours.
