FAISALABAD:

Scores of residents of Satiana Road and adjoining area on Saturday staged a protest demonstration against a coal factory, saying it was polluting the environment and causing respiratory problems among their children.

The protesters gathered at Satiana Road and blocked it for traffic. They burnt old tyres and chanted slogans against the factory administration.

Taking to newsmen, Rehmat Ali, one of the protesters, said the coal factory had been emitting ash-heavy smoke.

“There is a permanent haze in the atmosphere,” he said. He said residents were having trouble breathing because of the pollution.

He said several complaints about this had been made to the factory administration as well as public representatives but no one had taken steps to lower pollution in their neighbourhood.

He said the factory should be moved away from the residential area.

Later, a police team headed by the Saddar SHO met the protesters and assured them that the matter would be taken up with relevant authorities.

The protesters called off their demonstration on his assurance.
