LUMS engineering faculty secures US patent for radar based electronic warfare technology

LUMS says this is the first ever US patent on electronic warfare from Pakistan, and was issued on June 30

LAHORE: The Electrical Engineering faculty of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) have secured a US patent on their research related to Electronic Counter - Counter Measure (ECCM) radar technique, which nullifies the effect of jamming by ground-based radars and hence detects the true location of targets.

According to a statement by the university, Dr Ijaz Haider Naqvi and his PhD student Faran Awais Butt have secured the US patent. This is the first time that Pakistan has managed to get a US patent for electronic warfare.

The work is based on Butt’s MS thesis “Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) of Radars” that he completed in 2012 at LUMS under the supervision of Dr Ijaz Naqvi.

The idea is to prevent jamming of radars, utilising two radars located at a distance to prevent both velocity and range gate pull offs. In the proposed solution, bi-static radars are used in combination with the mono-static radars to mitigate the ECM effects of deception jamming.

In addition to working out solutions to counter effects of ECM, Dr Naqvi and Faran have also been working on solutions which can counter the low observability of stealth targets.

Both have had multiple joint publications relating to radar electronic warfare, which have been presented at different conferences held in China, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine and Czech Republic.

Last year, their paper was the sole paper from Pakistan that was published in the International Radar Symposium, which was held in Poland.

While the application fee for the patent was sponsored by the HEC, the issuance fee was sponsored by the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS.

Once the novel research is open then any one should take benefit from it. if a Pakistani students can do this novel type of research then no doubt we can also implement this technology practically.

Basit | 9 years ago | Reply @Khurram: ECM and ECCM are not the same thing. One is jamming the radar, the other is preventing the radars from being jammed. And ECM and ECCM maybe old concepts, but the technologies being used are evolving each passing year. It's a heated battle in the defense industry with 5th generation aircraft.

Do you know the challenges people face in Pakistan? People barely have money for tomatoes to say nothing of research and patent fees. Come on yaar. What good is an M.I.T education without having learned the power of empathy?

I am so allergic to critics who are just breathing to discourage others. If you are such pseudo intellectual then why bother commenting here, dont waste your time here dude and use your MIT potential and make something none have done before. Good luck!

Aziz | 9 years ago | Reply Securing patent is good but not a big deal especially in USA where technology patents are common and people have written books like Parents and its Discontents...It will be important to know what are potential licensing opportunities in this patent. Great if it would yield some royalty and otherwise it is an addition in dead weight which can only make patent trolls happy!

So congratulations to the people involved in the research. How much it would be of use is another question and only time will tell.
