ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has sought a comprehensive record from the Ministry of Ports and Shipping regarding the appointment of employees from grade one to 20 during the last three years.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Javed Iqbal heard the petition filed by Abdul Jabbar Memon who has challenged the appointment of Mehmood Zameer Farooqi, brother-in-law of Makhdoom Amin Fahim, the Federal Minister for Commerce, in Port Qasim Authority.

Jabbar pleaded that the appointment of Mehmood Zameer Farooqi was made without merit in the Ministry of Ports and Shipping for a two-year term whereas he was removed from service illegally, which was unjust and a negation of his fundamental rights.

During the course of hearing, Justice Javed Iqbal observed that the time of nepotism has passed. “Now appointments will be made on merit.”

The court issued notices to Secretary Port Qasim Authority in this regard and directed him to submit the record on the appointment of employees in Grade one to 20 for the last three years on the next date. The case has been adjourned for an indefinite period.
