Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, BUTSA President Dr Muhammad Zubair, General Secretary Ameer Nawaz Khan and other office bearers said the allegations levelled against the professors of University of Science and Technology Bannu are baseless. They urged the provincial government, governor and officials of the higher education department to ensure the FIR is withdrawn and the teachers are cleared of all charges.
Blocking entry
BUTSA members said the university professors had been arrested on June 12 outside Archives and Library Hall in the provincial capital where a syndicate meeting of the varsity was being convened. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Higher Education Department (HED) Secretary Muhammad Ali Shehzada and the university’s vice chancellor (VC) Abdur Rahim Marwat.
During the meeting, the professors had intended to voice their reservations to the syndicate members. However, security guards did not allow them to enter the premises.
As a result, a heated argument broke out among professors and security guards. Subsequently, the professors were arrested and spent one night behind bars.
On June 13, the provincial chapter of Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association urged the government to conduct an enquiry into the arrest.
Speaking at the news conference, BUTSA members condemned the mistreatment of university professors and insisted the VC and HED secretary be removed from office.
