ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the nomination of a ruling party candidate for Senate election.

The petition was filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Shireen Mazari challenging nomination of Iqbal Zafar Jhagra as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate for the Senate elections from Islamabad.

A division bench comprising Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui and Justice Athar Minallah dismissed the petition as it had become infructuous following the notification of Jhagra’s victory in the polls and petitioner’s earlier prayer to the court to issue directions for the rejections of nomination papers. The bench, however, said that the petitioner could file a fresh application before the Election Commission of Pakistan.

In the petition filed through her counsel Barrister Shoaib Razzaq, Dr Mazari,  contended that PML-N’s candidates — Jhagra and Raheela Magsi — could not contest elections from the federal capital because they were not local residents. She had contended that the two candidates were neither capital city’s residents nor were registered voters and hence they could not contest the Senate elections from Islamabad.

Decision on Magsi’s position could not be confirmed till the filing of this story.
