The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the corporate structure of the Provincial Energy Development Organization (PEDO) to allow it to run as an autonomous commercial entity. This was stated in an official handout issued on Saturday.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Energy Apex Committee which was chaired by CM Pervez Khattak. The aim behind forming an autonomous entity is to expedite the execution of energy generation projects and avoid bureaucratic hurdles in such schemes. The body will exploit the potential of 30,000 megawatts of hydro power generation in the province in addition to helping the oil and gas sectors enhance their production according to targets set for future. The autonomous company will be formed under the Energy and Power department of the province.

Participants at the meeting expressed satisfaction over oil and gas exploration and production activities undertaken by the provincial government.

It was decided oil companies which approach the K-P government to set up refineries in the southern districts of the province will be recommended to the federal government for consideration. The CM said he would help oil companies set up refineries in the province and directed the energy department to focus on other parts of the province as well where clear signs of availability of oil and gas have surfaced.
