Pakistan dismisses India's concerns over China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Responding to Sushma Swaraj's statement, FO says the $46 billion project will benefit the entire region

ISLAMABAD: Dismissing India’s concerns over the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor, Pakistan said that the $46 billion project will prove to be beneficial for the entire region.

The Foreign Office has responded to the Indian Minister’s statement strongly, stating that Pakistan is committed to the project as it will benefit the entire region.

On May 31, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “very strongly” raised the issue regarding China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) during his recent visit to Beijing, and termed the project “unacceptable”.

“Prime minster during his visit took up the issue very firmly and spoke very strongly that the CPEC going through PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) is unacceptable,” Swaraj said at a press conference.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had forewarned about possible backlash from local and international bodies, but he said that this project is very significant for a prosperous Pakistan.

The Pakistan-China Economic Corridor was announced in April this year during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan.

Rubbish! | 9 years ago | Reply @wajahat hussain: Smart man! You definitely should get as much benefit as other provinces are getting for getting this rout goes through their land. As a matter of fact you can ask China to take this route through Tajikistan and Chitral of KPK instead. Those areas are really left behind in this process. I am surprised too, why all are fighting to have this trade route goes through their areas including you India.

Chinese N submarines are already taking positions in the Indian Ocean since your PM complained about this Pak-China project which when ready will complete the loop of encirclement around you. Once that happens the next step , in polite terms , will be gang rap of your miserable country.

China needs this project to develop its western half, and it will not sacrifice development in this region to appease India. Even the USA supports this. India cannot yet accept the fact that literally no other country in the world accepts India's claims to kashmir, but indians are so deluded that they make it literally illegal to display the ground realities on maps! It literally is the law in India that the entire region of Kashmir be included in a map of india. What a laughable law that highlights India's insecurity!

Even though India has no surety it will ever step a foot in Pak Kashmir, it don't harm to make Pak Bleed from any corner it can. I remember when their leader claimed a while back; We will make Pak starve for one drop of water coming down from Himalayan range, India or Afghanistan. Their mind set is set-on-hate & revenge. They can't peacefully Sleep Now!..

Karrar | 9 years ago | Reply Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is not and never have been the part of Kashmir for much of its history. Just because Kashmir based Dogra Raj illegitimately ruled it once as a part of broader Kashmir doesn't make it its integral part. Pakistani bureaucracy have created all the fuss which is haunting them back. By the way, Chinese authorities treat GB as a semi-autonomous territory, independent of the disputed region of Kashmir. For this reason, they don't care what either India or Pak thinks of GB's legal status.

Khattak | 9 years ago | Reply To avoid the disputed Kashmir region, the Corridor should be diverted to Wakh Khan in Afghanistan & through Badahshan to Chaman & Gawader. China is already building road from Kashghar to Badakhshan through Wakh Khan corridor so it will be an alternative & undisputed route. Think about with cool mind & without any prejudice.

It is again quoted here, and remember what China did in return, China high ups called Pakistan and told that ‘India will sabotage the PCEC’ so they need to be careful. This was reported about two weeks back. That’s how strategic and strong Pakistan-China friendship is, Xi Jinping in his recent visit to Pakistan has called this ‘Iron Friends’. China India relations are just transactional. The CPEC is proposed by China to Pakistan as China needed it to open the western region which is not as economically developed, along with the corridor to be used as an energy supply route. India should keep this in mind.

Sobriquet | 9 years ago | Reply In the UN resolution, the cease-fire order and the truce agreement that the Pakistani govt signed, it agreed to withdraw all its troops from the whole of Kashmir, before any further steps could be taken. So it is clear that Gilgit is illegally occupied by Pakistan and is in violation of the agreement and the ceasefire by using Kashmiri territory as its own.
