RAWALPINDI: The district health department will introduce the injectable polio vaccine in high-risk areas of Rawalpindi from June 8. This was stated by EDO (Health) Dr Nasir Mehmood on Wednesday. Under the drive, polio teams would visit 13 union councils (UCs) of the city, five UCs of Cantonment, six UCs of Taxila tehsil and five UCs in rural areas which have been declared high-risk, he added. The EDO said injectable/inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was more effective as it enhances the body’s immune system to fight the crippling disease at least for a year and it was being done on the recommendation of World Health Organization (WHO). He said the high-risk areas were designated as such after sewage samples indicated presence of the poliovirus there. During the drive, children between the ages of three to 23 months will be given IPV, he added.
