Escap Survey: Economic growth likely to improve

Government’s efforts to address power shortages and other infrastructural bottlenecks may contribute to the cause

ISLAMABAD: Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s (ESCAP) former macroeconomic chief Dr Muhammad Hussain Malik has said that economic growth in Pakistan is expected to improve in coming years, partly due to government’s major efforts to address electricity shortages and other infrastructural bottlenecks. “There is an urgent need to make this growth more inclusive and broad-based by spreading its benefits to all parts of the country and segments of society,” he said. Malik was speaking at the launching ceremony of ESCAP 2015 survey here on Thursday. The survey titled “Making growth more inclusive for sustainable development” shows that growth in the region’s developing nations will increase only slightly to 5.9% in 2015 from 5.8% last year.
