HYDERABAD: The Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) installed a solar irradiance and wind speed measuring equipment, called the solar resource mapping station, on Thursday.

The station will provide real-time data regarding the potential of solar and wind energy to harness it for power generation.

"This project will result in continuous research towards utilisation of renewable energy resources for solving the problem of energy shortage in the country," said MUET vice-chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili.

The project is an initiative of the Alternative Energy Development Board and the World Bank.

MUET's Dr Gordhan Vellasi, who is associated with the project, said that the World Bank-funded Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (Esmap) will collect data from the system and will share it with the university every day. The system will be handed over to MUET after two years.

The Esmap is setting up the system at nine different sites in the country, including two 'high precision' stations in Islamabad and Bahawalpur. The remaining are 'standard precision' stations suitable for remote locations. Huge tracts of mountainous land in the Jamshoro and Thatta districts offer great potential for harnessing the two renewable energies.

Haroon Rashid | 8 years ago | Reply MUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili appreciate your idea for capacity building in Sindh and Pakistan This is a landmark for Pakistan in support to the GHG. Everywhere you see is thermal power, and related fuels. First purchase of the thermal power general equipment, than the fuel cost, the transmission of that power by again borrowing and forming the power transmission equipment a big source for maintenance, pilferage/thefts of power, than the security/surveillance of the thermal power transmission lines. After all this mess up we see GHG issue which we are buying at cost of borrowing, financing, debts, debts, inflation, pledging the nation and generations in debts, and debt servicing. MUET’s Dr Gordhan Vellasi, associated with the project, for World Bank-funded Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (Esmap) will collect data from the system and will share it with the university every day. May I suggest Dr Gordhan Vellasi not to waste this legendary investment to the survival of the nation. Let this be accessible on line IP network to optimise the usage. As seen with the universities grants upto now, it all got rusted, and wasted and finally stolen with some FIR lodged with the police. This should be taken seriously to optimise the coverage and usage with Esmap, for online verification through out Pakistan.
