At least eight people were killed and four injured when a speeding dumper hit a passenger van in Swat Colony late on Sunday night. Muhammad Aslam, 45, along with his wife Abeera Bibi, 35, two daughters Muqaddas, 18, and Nida, 14, and their relatives were returning home from visiting the Shah Noorani shrine in Balochistan when their van collided head-on with the dumper.
Six of them died on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries shortly after being taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi. One more person, namely 18-year-old Shahnaz, died during treatment at the hospital on Monday. The others who died in the accident, apart from Aslam and his family, were identified as Shaheryar, 12, Saba Bibi, 45, Azam, 35, and Shamshad Bibi. Those still being treated at the hospital included Sara, 5, and Imad, 4.
"We visit the shrine once a year," Aslam's brother Saeed told The Express Tribune. "The accident occurred when we were returning in different vehicles after staying there for one night."
The victims, who were residents of Neelum Colony, Clifton, hailed from Dunyapur in Punjab. Their bodies were sent to their hometown for the burials.
Baldia Town SP Ejaz Hashmi said that the driver of the dumper, Muhammad Din, had been arrested and his vehicle impounded. An FIR has been registered against him by Saeed.
