KARACHI:

The commander of a banned militant outfit and seven of his accomplices were apprehended by the Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on Monday.

Officials said that the militants arrived in the city from Waziristan, allegedly to carry out a major terror activity. They added that explosives and weapons were seized from the militants.

The arrests were made after an exchange of fire between the CTD officials and militants when the CTD conducted a raid at the militants' hideout in Ittehad Town, Baldia. AEC in-charge Ali Raza claimed that his team carried out a raid on information that a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan's Swat chapter and his accomplices were staying there. He claimed to have recovered nearly 50 kilogrammes of explosives, 10 ball bombs, three rifles, eight TT pistols and two motorcycles.

The officer did not disclose the identity of the militants. He did, however, add that they were going to make more arrests based on information provided by those who were arrested.
