KARACHI:

All our lives, we’ve been hearing our parents telling us to get off the computers and go outside. We’ve almost always considered it to be okay to sit in front of the computer screen or with our laptops in front of us for five hours straight – working, using Facebook and binge-watching our new favourite show. Whether we agree or not, these habits gradually begin to affect our posture, resulting in severe back problems at an early age.

One of the most realistic examples my father always gave me is that my grandfather began to have back problems around the age of 60, and he himself had them since he turned 30. I’m roughly 18 and am already beginning to get backache and posture problems, so it would be safe to say our new way of living is liable for it.

I’m not suggesting you stop using your laptops, but there are ways to modify your routine to avoid a sloppy posture and backache. Sometimes, it is necessary to take a break; if you’ve been working for half an hour on your laptop, get up, stretch and walk around for five minutes or so. This will help you change your posture and cause movement. We’ve been repeatedly reminded to exercise, walk around, and go for a jog or to the gym. I feel it is essential to reinforce this reminder to add flexibility and activity in our lives, as you can’t get a posture like Kate Upton by just sitting at home.

A good mattress is always smart investment

Many think that good posture only comes with height and that short people will always look and feel hunched. Anyone who thinks that needs to have a look at Emma Watson, who isn’t tall but has an enviable posture. Whether you are tall or not, sitting straight will always be of benefit, so avoid slouching while sitting. Concurrently, you also require strengthening your muscles to avoid these problems. The intake of Vitamin D is critical to maintain your health. Try sitting out in the sun or taking meals that are high in the vitamin.

When you are sleeping, try sleeping on a flat and comfortable surface. Broken mattresses often cause problems that you must prevent if you want a good posture. A good mattress is always smart investment. Last, I believe yoga is a natural and exceptional way to add activity, increase flexibility, and bring movement in your everyday routine, and when paired with restful sleep, you can kiss your posture problems goodbye.
