Karachi’s master saxophonist Hillary Furtado passed away early Monday morning. Hillary was among the first saxophonists of the city music scene in the 1970s onwards, after the pioneering works of the legendary classical and jazz artistes Alex Rodrigues and Dominic Gonsalves of the 1940s and 1960s, respectively. Hillary started his musical career in 1968 as a young vocalist for bands such as the In-Crowd, Talisman and Keynotes. In the 70s, he was part of the first Pakistani pop band to have won a contract to play at the Merlin Hotel in Singapore. Hillary won many accolades in the local press for his vocals. Norman D’Souza, a senior member of his band while paying his farewell tribute said, “Hillary was a great musician, a fine vocalist and one of the best to have made his mark in Pakistan and the Far-East.”
