Beating one’s wife

Letter November 30, 2010
Justifying domestic violence to one’s life partner through the prism of faith is just not tenable.

NEW DELHI: I write with reference to Atika Rehman’s article of November 30 titled “Can wife-beating ever be justified?”

A knotted handkerchief dealt a grievous eye injury to a fellow classmate of mine while a slap (a general idea of a lighter corporal punishment) out of the blue can cause cardiac arrest. Justifying domestic violence to one’s life partner through the prism of faith is just not tenable. One can write endless number of blogs but the fact of the matter is that the solution to this rests with the woman at the receiving end. She can either live with this abuse or demonstrate the good sense and courage to stand up to it.
