KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee condemned the killing of its worker, Danish Kaleem, and demanded the government arrest his killers.

The victim, 25, was employed at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and was a member of the MQM’s medical aid committee of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Unit. According to the Pakistan Bazar police duty officer, Kaleem was standing near Iqbal Market, Sector 11½, Orangi, when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle pulled up and shot at him multiple times on Thursday afternoon. He is the 18th activist of the party killed since January.

Kaleem had been married for a year and fathered a girl only 20 days ago. The officer said the victim’s father was also murdered two years ago.

In a press statement, the Rabita Committee said that in January this year, 17 workers had been killed by terrorists while in February, Kaleem has been targeted. “The murder of Danish Kaleem is a conspiracy to ruin the peace of this city,” said the members in the statement, adding that the MQM were the first to support the operation against terrorists and militants, which is why it was being targeted. “At one end, law enforcement agencies are illegally arresting MQM workers and subjecting them to torture, while at the other, terrorists are targeting the activists.”
