An anti-terrorism court on Friday awarded death sentence on 47 counts and life imprisonment to three convicts who attacked the Rescue 15 building and an office of an intelligence institution, killing 26 people and leaving 337 injured. The Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore (I) also fined Abid Akram, Sarfraz and Shabbeer Rs25.35 million each. They had attacked the buildings with a vehicle loaded with explosives on May 27, 2009.
The culprits were identified through footage of a surveillance camera. They were arrested from Shahdara and Faisalabad. Police had registered an FIR against them under Sections 302, 324, 148, 149, 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 3/4 of the Explosive Substances Act and Section 7 of the ATA. The convicts were awarded death penalties under Sections 302 and Section 7 of the ATA on 47 counts each and life imprisonment under 3/4 of the Explosive Substances Act. Minister Rana Ahmad and a former inspector general congratulated the Prosecution Department for successfully managing to convict the terrorists.
