Horticulture: Show ends amidst colour and fragrance

More than 5,000 chrysanthemum plants were displayed and twenty institutes participated in the exhibition.

RAWALPINDI: “The importance of flower cannot be described in words. It can only be felt by true nature-lovers,” said Capital Development Authority Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi, on Saturday.

He said this while addressing, as a chief guest, at the prize distribution ceremony of four-day Chrysanthemum and autumn flowers show at the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR).

Commending PMAS-AAUR for organising a wonderful event to increase awareness among the people regarding the significance of plants and flowers, he said that such exhibitions would encourage people to plant more flowers at their homes. At the end of the exhibition, the chief guest distributed prizes and certificate among the winner of the show.

More than 5,000 chrysanthemum plants were displayed and twenty institutes participated in the exhibition, putting the flowers from their respective nurseries on display. The flowers were placed in the forms of bed, national flag, pie shapes, and pyramids and were arranged in a way to convey different messages to attract visitors.  More than 120 students of different schools, colleges and universities also participated in the dry and fresh flower and cut flower arrangements categories.

Moreover, residents of twin cities also visited Arid University to witness the show and showed their appreciation for the flower display.   Pleased to see hundreds of varying shades of autumn at one place, the residents of twin cities were of the view that the government should arrange more exhibitions in future.

In the flower show more than 12 varieties of Chrysanthemum included Intermediate, Incurved, Reflex, Sprays, Anemone, Pompons, Korean Hybrid, Single Flowered, Quill Flowered, Decorative, Spoon and other autumn flowers. Varieties of Bougainvillea, Begonia, Coleus, Gerbera, Dahlia, Poinsettia and Flowering Shrubs were also displayed in the show.

Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi was declared the winner of the competition, while Chaklala Cantonment Board stood second. Similarly, Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad got first, PMAS-AAUR got second in the large and middle category. In the category of small organisations, Institute for Landscape and Floury Culture took the first position, while Islamabad Club stood first in Club and Hotels category.
