Winter is coming to IMAX

Game of Thrones ‘movie’ will be shown on the big screen by the end of January.

HBO’s biggest show Game of Thrones is set to become the first TV series to get a theatrical release with HBO and IMAX striking a deal. The cable network plans to release a Game of Thrones ‘movie’ consisting of the final two season 4 episodes as well as an exclusive season 5 trailer on IMAX screens at the end of January, reported Daily Mail.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Game of Thrones will play at 150 IMAX theatres in US for one week, premiering on January 23 and playing till January 29. While the visual spectacle of the HBO hit makes it a natural for the large-screen treatment, GOT will be digitally re-mastered to fit the IMAX format.

“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO.  “We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event,” reported variety.com. “It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX,” added Greg Foster, IMAX’s senior executive vice president.The two episodes included in the theater release are Battle of Castle Black and The Children, season 4’s Emmy-nominated finale.

Martin, Game of Thrones tells the epic story of warring royal houses in the fictional land of Westeros. Production of the series has taken place in locations from Ireland to Morocco to Iceland and features a recurrently changing cast of more than 200 characters.
