QUETTA: At least 24 prisoners facing lifetime sentences have been shifted to Mach Jail from the Quetta District Jail on Saturday.

The transfer was a part of routine measures undertaken by the Quetta Jail authority.

“Quetta district jail is for the under trail prisoners and the shifted prisoners were sentenced 25 years imprisonment by the courts,” Basheer Bangulzai, Inspector General (IG) Prison Balochistan told The Express Tribune when asked whether the transfer was done in wake of security risks.

Sources said that it was not legally justified to keep the court punished prisoners in Quetta jail, however, the transferred prisoners had been imprisoned in the Quetta district jail for about three to four years.

“There is only one prison at Quetta District Jail for the prisoners facing death penalty,” Bangulzai said.

There are currently around 800 prisoners at Quetta Jail.
