KARACHI: Members of the medical fraternity and students paid glowing tributes to one of the most renowned doctors of Pakistan, Dr Syed Mohibur Rab, who was the founder of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan (CPSP).

Dr Rab also served as the president of the CPSP, its overseas adviser and an examiner in the Royal College of Physicians, UK. In an event, titled ‘The Legacy Remains’ organised by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) in the premises of the CPSP on Sunday, the speakers shared their experiences with Dr Rab.

“Dr Rab was an excellent examiner,” reminisced Prof Tipu Sultan, the councilor of CPSP. “I had an interaction with him for 37 years. He was my mother’s teacher.” Dr Seemin Jamali, the joint executive director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) agreed. “Dr Rab was a great person. He was always there for everyone.”

Her colleague, Dr Tasnim Ahsan, the executive director of JPMC, shared her views. “He was my father’s childhood friend,” she said. “I remember how he taught us. I still remember the day when he retired from the JPMC.”

Dr Rab’s daughter, Dr Shaheena Rab also shared her experiences. “Shaheena beta, never be discouraged and keep striving,” she recalled her father’s advice. “His contributions to the field of medicine are remarkable and will be cherished by us forever.”

The speakers recalled that Dr Rab’s memory was extraordinary and he was not only an expert in his field, but was also interested in politics, showbiz and other fields.

“He was competent and had grip on several subjects - even politics and sports. His knowledge was immense,” said one of his colleagues at the JPMC, Dr Sultan Farooqi. “Dr Rab was a great mentor for me,” he added.

Dr Manzoor Zaidi, a senior colleague of Dr Rab, said that most of the colleagues called him Rab sahab out of respect. “He was very good to his patients and his dedication to work was incredible.”

Dr Mirza Ali Azhar, the president of PMA Karachi, said that Dr Rab was his teachers’ teacher. “He was my examiner,” he added. “He urged us to be professional in our dealings and not to interact with the patients for business.”

Dr Nasir Ahmed, Dr Salman, Dr Yasmeen Khan, Dr Sarwar Jamil Siddiqui, Tariq Wajid and Taha Hussain also spoke at the occasion.
