What you eat: Khalis Food Market returns with natural, organic foods

Citizens throng stalls featuring home-made foods.

LAHORE: The Khalis Food Market is back with an assortment of home-made and organically grown goods.

This time the stalls were set up in an enclosed area of T Block Park on Javed Iqbal Road, Gulberg.

Visiting the market featuring 46 stalls early on Sunday was a good weekend activity for many.

Mahgul Rashid, a designer at the market, said “I bring my son here because such activities are limited in the city.”

There were also those looking for a specific product anxious that it might run out.

Hina Salman was relieved to find the last pack of desi ghee she had come to buy. “I love the home-made chutneys and organic products.”

The market has become an important forum for small businesses.

Saadia Waqar and Rabia Suhail, a mother-daughter duo, running Organic Delight are one of the success stories.

“When I first visited the Khalis Market in 2013 I thought that this was something I could also do – bring chutneys and home-made foods that aren’t available in regular markets,” says Waqar.

Over a year and a half they have been displaying only at other food markets such as Haryali. They have expanded their range from having only four products to 21 products.

Hajra Ilyas of Portager has also seen her business grow. She grows edible plants and flowers. This is her third season at Khalis. She has been using the market and the social media as main avenues for advertising her products.

“It has been a great exposure,” she told The Express Tribune. “The hits on my Facebook page have also increased. I’ve also started home delivery.”
