Death toll reaches 12 as 4 more infants die in Sargodha hospital

SARGODHA: Four infants died in the nursery of Sargodha’s District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital on Thursday, taking the death toll for past two days to 12, Express News reported.

The children allegedly died due to insufficient oxygen supply and doctors' negligence.

Earlier on November 19, eight babies had died in the same hospital, with parents holding the hospital’s administration responsible for the tragedy.

A panel formed to probe the deaths has completed its investigation and has sent the report to Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif.

Executive District Officer (EDO) Health had, however, denied the accusations and said the hospital has central oxygen system and there was no deficiency of the gas in any ward.

Adviser to the chief minister had also visited the hospital and examined various wards including the nursery.

The hospital’s nursery ward is the only infant care facility in the whole Sargodha Division and children from Khushab, Bhakkar and Mianwali are also brought there for treatment. No private hospital in Sargodha offers nursery facility for the newborns.

This is extremely heart breaking. Is this our governments gift on childrens day? The systems apathy to people in government hospitals is appaling. Will someone take responsibility, see the case through? This is not the first time in Punjab, not too far away in time , back in September this year, 8 infants lost their lives in Vehari in a similar scenario, the Governemnt had promised action in 48 hours..Is this our way of curtailing population? My heart goes out to those mothers, fathers and other family members who mourn their little flowers.

There is no money left for healthcare after wasting every penny on useless lavish projects, like the Roman emperors used to do. Whatever was left, got spent on the foreign tours, bribing journalists, and personal well-being. Poor were supposed to die in agony, which they are doing.
