Rabbani had met with Bhagwandas to speak with the retired justice about the post of the CEC.
The government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had both suggested Bhagwandas' name for the vacant post.
However, given that the government had decided to include political parties regarding the appointment of the CEC, sources suggested that political parties considered Bhagwandas as unfeasible given his constitutional bar.
Having already traded names of potential candidates for the ECP hot seat with the Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Thursday, the prime minister has now started a process of taking other political leaders into confidence on the matter.
According to an official statement, Rashid on Friday contacted six political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders Haider Abbas Rizvi and Babar Ghauri, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Amir Sirajul Haq, National Party Leader Hasil Bazinjo, Awami National Party’s Haji Adeel and Qaumi Watan Party head Aftab Ahmed Sherpao.

As would any conscientious judge refuse to take this job!!! Justice Bhagwandas, Justice Wajihuddin, & Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid are three of the most distinguished judges in whom the public has the ultimate trust. And all of them will be reluctant to take this job that can never be free of political fetters. The Government will appoint an honest judge as CEC, only to be over-ruled by the other 4 corrupt judges on the commission, as what happened with Fakhruddin Ebrahim. It's a shame Justice Ebrahim did not tell the whole truth to the public as to what really happened that he had to preside over the most corrupt elections in the history of Pakistan. It sullied his name forever in history.
A very sensible decision after what happened with Fakhro Bhai and Justice(R) Sh. Riaz. No one wants to be bashed by PTI without proof.
No honorable nominee would want to serve as CEC as anyone who loses can blame without proof and thereby bring ill repute to the CEC.
@aaaaa: kindly do not distort facts. Justice Fakhruddin did not resign because of allegations levelled by PTI leadership. Please click on the link below to get the factual story penned by Mr. Iftikhar A. Khan in Dawn News Paper on Aug. 01, 2013 http://www.dawn.com/news/1033260/dejected-fakhru-bhai-resigns-as-cec
A relevant excerpt from the said write up is given below:
"Sources privy to the development told Dawn that the main reason for the resignation by Justice Ebrahim enjoying the reputation of being a man of principles was encroachment by the Supreme Court in the exclusive domain of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and failure of his fellow members to effectively act to protect the commission’s independence."
"According to a source, Fakhru Bhai was displeased by the court’s decision to change the presidential poll schedule on a petition of a PML-N legislator without hearing other parties."
Why would anybody take up this post now, given what the PTI has done to a man of F.G.Ebrahim's status? Shame is not a word that exists in their vocabulary. Good decision.
Honorable Persons are shying away from the position of the CEC. The shameful characterless individuals of the likes of Riaz Kiyani are just sticking on.
