Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas on Saturday rejected the nomination of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in a meeting with Senator Raza Rabbani, Express News reported.

Rabbani had met with Bhagwandas to speak with the retired justice about the post of the CEC.

The government and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had both suggested Bhagwandas' name for the vacant post.

However, given that the government had decided to include political parties regarding the appointment of the CEC, sources suggested that political parties considered Bhagwandas as unfeasible given his constitutional bar.

Having already traded names of potential candidates for the ECP hot seat with the Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Thursday, the prime minister has now started a process of taking other political leaders into confidence on the matter.

According to an official statement, Rashid on Friday contacted six political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders Haider Abbas Rizvi and Babar Ghauri, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Amir Sirajul Haq, National Party Leader Hasil Bazinjo, Awami National Party’s Haji Adeel and Qaumi Watan Party head Aftab Ahmed Sherpao.

As would any conscientious judge refuse to take this job!!! Justice Bhagwandas, Justice Wajihuddin, & Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid are three of the most distinguished judges in whom the public has the ultimate trust. And all of them will be reluctant to take this job that can never be free of political fetters. The Government will appoint an honest judge as CEC, only to be over-ruled by the other 4 corrupt judges on the commission, as what happened with Fakhruddin Ebrahim. It's a shame Justice Ebrahim did not tell the whole truth to the public as to what really happened that he had to preside over the most corrupt elections in the history of Pakistan. It sullied his name forever in history.

A very sensible decision after what happened with Fakhro Bhai and Justice(R) Sh. Riaz. No one wants to be bashed by PTI without proof.
