ISLAMABAD: Set to retire in the next few days, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt General Zaheerul Islam paid a farewell visit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday, Express News reported.

Islam will step down as the spymaster on November 7, with Lt-General Rizwan Akhtar taking his post.

PM Nawaz and ISI chief discussed the ongoing political and security situation of the country, exchanging thoughts on how to handle these matters.

The post of ISI chief is the second most important after that of the army chief. The head of the agency is appointed by the prime minister on the recommendation of the army chief.

On September 22, the army spokesperson had announced appointment of Lt-Gen Akhtar as the new chief of the premier intelligence agency.
