Walking through history: Students visit Takht Bhai

50 boys taken to world heritage site as part of heritage awareness programme.

PESHAWAR: Government school students visited the world heritage site of Takht Bhai on Sunday as part of the students Study Tour Programme organised by the Tourism Cooperation Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (TCKP).

“The purpose is to make the young generation aware of the rich culture and heritage of the province,” said TCKP consultant Zahoor Ahmand Durani.



The first group of students included 50 boys who were given talks organised by the K-P Directorate of Archaeology about the significance of historic sites in the province. Officials also handed literature on the region’s heritage.

Rising above the surrounding plains, the ruins of Takht Bhai are situated in the Mardan district of the province.

The ruins were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and date back over 2,000 years to the 1st BCE. In its time, it was the home and temple of Buddhist monks in the area.

However, despite its rich heritage, public knowledge of the site and its history is very low. Durani added more such programmes would be arranged to spread awareness.
