MULTAN: Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar on Friday said that veteran politician Javed Hashmi's acceptance of defeat in yesterday's by-elections in Multan was proof of democracy.

While addressing the media in Multan, the Punjab governor, whom sources say has decided to resign and play a more active role in politics from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) platform, congratulated Amir Dogar, an independent candidate supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

On October 16, Hashmi faced a historic by-election defeat as he conceded his traditional National Assembly seat (NA-149) to Dogar. He had relinquished the seat after he left the PTI following a disagreement with party chief Imran Khan.

Dogar, the PTI-backed candidate, won with a comfortable margin of 14,000 votes, polling 52,321 votes against Hashmi’s 38,393 votes, according to the official results, announced by the regional election commission.

Problems in Pakistan

Speaking about problems that the country faces today, Sarwar said that all political parties together can face these challenges.

He said that the country is facing hurdles such as unemployment, injustice, illiteracy and poverty.

"Seven million children in Pakistan don’t go to schools; children who should be in schools are working as domestic workers," the governor added.

Whatever you say are undeniable facts but what are you going to do about it Chaudhryjee. Staying with and supporting the thugs who have looted and plundered our resources would not help us, you gotta decide either you are with our exploiters or US, are you with the victims or their victimizers. Tell us in plain and straight no gobbledygook, please.
