KARACHI: The fresh wave of violence in the city compelled the police and Rangers to hold a meeting on Wednesday to devise plans to further accelerate the pace of the Karachi operation.

Six people - a police officer, a retired schoolteacher, an MQM ex-councillor and his son, a Jamaat-e-Islami worker and a faith healer - were shot dead and four other bodies were found on Tuesday alone. A police station also came under attack, with most of the incidents occurring in District Central. This spate of violence came only a day after Sindh IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali claimed that only one person was killed in the metropolis on Monday.

In light of the frequent attacks on the police and a surge in targeted killings, an operational committee meeting was held under Rangers DG Maj Gen Rizwan Akhtar at the headquarters of Pakistan Rangers Sindh. This was the first time the operational meeting was attended by designated Rangers DG Maj Gen Bilal Akbar, who is expected to take over from Akhtar next month. Jamali, Karachi additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo and the Intelligence Bureau director also attended the meeting.

A Rangers spokesperson said that the operational committee reviewed the current spike in violence in the city and made plans to step up the pace of the operation. The law enforcement agencies also decided to pool their resources to launch a fresh operation with renewed vigour.

Meanwhile, Thebo also visited District Central late on Tuesday night to inquire about the attack at Hyderi police station and the incidents of targeted killing. He further gave reassurances that the operation would continue until the elimination of all the criminals in Karachi.
