FAISALABAD: University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has launched a relief and rehabilitation campaign for flood victims.

UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Tuesday directed deans and directors to extend all-out help to the affected.

He said in the first phase, edible and other items of daily use would be distributed among flood victims in Faisalabad and Sahiwal divisions.

“In the second phase agricultural inputs, including seed, fertiliser, pesticides and implements, will be given away to help rehabilitate them,” the vice chancellor said. He said UAF students had started fundraising.

He said the university had partnered with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department and Agricultural Extension Department to provide vaccines and medicines in the two divisions.

He recalled that the UAF had helped the victims of 2010 floods, especially in Athara Hazari in Jhang by providing agricultural inputs, implements, textbooks and school bags.

“The initiatives helped farmers become self-reliant again. Similar measures are needed now,” Khan said.

The vice chancellor stressed the need for adopting modern agricultural practices to ensure food security.

Without this, he said, the goal of doubling agri production by 2030 could not be achieved.

“Modern practices demand capital and skills. It is a matter of concern that despite being an agricultural country, we have to import potatoes and wheat.”
