KARACHI:

Nine people, including a father and his son, were killed in separate incidents of violence in the city on Tuesday.

Unidentified armed men targeted and killed 35-year-old Muhammad Zubair, son of Karim Buksh. The victim's minor son, three-year-old Daud Khan, who was with him at the time, was also shot dead in the incident.

Zubair, who used to run an oil shop, was returning home on his motorcycle after dropping his elder son to a nearby school. At least two armed motorcyclists opened fire at him at Gharib Shah Road in Lyari, within the limits of Kalakot police station.

Both the victims were killed on the spot. The bodies were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for autopsy and later handed over to the family. The deceased used to live at Afshani Gali, Lyari. Zubair's brother, Liaquat, had served as the councilor of union council 10 of Lyari. SHO Haji Sanaullah told The Express Tribune that the deceased and his family were well respected in the area and had no affiliations with any gangsters.

"They were well-connected with the law enforcement agencies in Lyari," explained SHO Sanaullah. "The gangsters, however, were unhappy with them because of their closeness with the law enforcers."

The officer said that the gangsters might have targeted Zubair due to the same reason, adding that the police have traced the suspects responsible for the incident and efforts were underway to arrest them.

A few hours later, another incident of target killing took place in District West, in which a blind man and his nephew were shot dead.

Ghulam Haider, 25, son of Munawar Hussain, along with his uncle, Sabir Hussain, 50, son of Alam Shah, was sitting at his optics shop near Irani Camp in Sector 11-L, Orangi Town, when they were targeted.

Police officials said that at least two young assailants entered the shop and opened fire at the victims. Ghulam Haider was shot at least seven times while his uncle was shot twice. Both victims died on the spot. The bodies were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. Police officials said that the victims might have been targeted for sectarian reasons.

The Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) condemned the incident and criticised the provincial government and law enforcement agencies. "Members of our community are being targeted every day in Karachi but the government and law enforcement agencies are simply repeating their rhetoric," said the MWM spokesperson. "We were hoping that the killing of Allama Akbar Kumaili would jolt the law enforcers into action but we were wrong."

In another firing incident in Orangi Town, 22-year-old Yasir, son of Hanif, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants near Islam Chowk, within the limits of Pakistan Bazaar police station. The deceased was a resident of the same area. Police officials claimed that the victim was shot dead for attempting to resist a robbery bid.

In District East, a young man was shot dead in a firing incident in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The deceased was identified as Hadi Asif. Police officials claimed that unidentified armed men shot and killed him because he did not stop his car near Safari Park when they tried to intercept him. The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy.

Also in Orangi Town, the body of a young man, who has yet to be identified, was found from Mominabad. Police officials said that the deceased was shot and killed by unidentified persons over unexplained reasons.

A sports goods shop owner, 42-year-old Naseem, son of Abdul Qudoos, was shot dead by armed motorcyclists when they opened fire at his shop in Liaquat market in Malir.

Separately, an alleged member of a Lyari gang, Sarwar alias Baba chief, was shot dead in Lyari, within the limits of Kalakot police station.
