KARACHI:

The Sea View tragedy in which 39 people drowned off the Karachi beach on the eve of Eidul Fitr could have been avoided if the ‘entities’ and ‘authorities’ involved in dredging had taken preventive measures, said Karachi police chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo on Thursday.

While speaking at a press conference at the Central Police Office, Additional Inspector General (AIG) Thebo, avoided to disclose the identity of the ‘entities and authorities’ but asserted that their negligence had been established.

“Our investigation, however, did not prove criminal negligence on their part, which, otherwise, would have prompted the state to lodge an FIR,” said the police chief. “Keeping in view the unintentional negligence, the police had compiled its recommendations that were sent to the government in order to avoid the loss of lives in the future.”

Meanwhile, AIG Thebo had claimed to arrest eight criminals involved in target killings and other offences in the city.

He said that alleged target killers, including Syed Hasan Abbas, Syed Ali Raza Zaidi, were found to be involved in killing three students of Darul Khair seminary in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on April 9, 2014 and two Jamia Binoria students near Numaish Chowrangi on February 16, 2013.

Another alleged target killer, Ghaus Ali, allegedly involved in firing at a police mobile in Ibrahim Haidery on February 3, 2014. Four police personnel were killed in the incident.

Two other alleged target killers identified as Muhammad Sajjad and Amir alias Nomi, involved in killings of 15 and 39 persons, respectively, were also arrested.
