KARACHI:

As many as 47 doctors became victims of target killing in Karachi between 2010 and 2014, according to a Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) report.

However, no concrete steps have yet been taken to address such murders, said the report. These doctors were killed for reasons including sectarian grounds, non-payment of extortion money, ransom, personal disputes, ethnic issues and affiliation with political parties, it added.

The PMA report revealed that 10 doctors have been killed in the current year so far. With the exception of 2005-2009, for which no data was available, a total of 133 doctors were killed in Karachi between 1990 and 2014.

“PMA has knocked on everyone’s doors to stop the target killing of healthcare professionals in this city,” said PMA Karachi president Dr Idrees Adhi, adding that no one was willing to do their duty.

“Political parties disown these murders but they are unwilling to devise policies to control them,” he said.
