Call for democracy: JI won’t support any unconstitutional demand, says Sirajul Haq

Says PM should resign if allegations of massive rigging are supported by a constitutional institution

LAHORE:

The central mediator and Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami Sirajul Haq has said that the demand for the premier’s resignation would only be constitutional if an institution supported the allegations and said that the May 2013 elections were massively rigged and the assemblies were bogus.

Speaking to the media at the JI headquarters in Mansoora after a meeting between JI’s provincial chiefs and central office-bearers, the JI chief explained that though the party wanted the participants of the sit-ins to return home successfully they will not support any unconstitutional move.

He stressed that political parties have a consensus that even if the sit-in continued for a hundred days no unconstitutional demand would be accepted.

He further underscored that the court’s orders for the registration of FIR in the Model Town incident should be complied with. “The image of the rulers will improve if they appeared before the court,” he added.

Haq maintained that the nation wanted the two sides to sit together to work out a political solution and not wait for a third party to interfere. He said the JI was continuing its role of a mediator with the support of other parties and was hopeful that a political solution would soon be found.

The JI chief said the party leaders attending the meeting had expressed grave concern over the worsening situation in the federal capital and appealed to the government as well as the protesting parties to show flexibility and come up with an early solution to the issues. They also lauded the establishment’s role so far.

Haq further said that most of the demands of the protesting parties were the voice of the masses. He said both protesting parties were talking of people’s rights, the supremacy of the Constitution and democracy.

He said Imran Khan’s demand for the reconstitution of the election commission in order to ensure transparent elections was the demand of the entire nation and the JI and all other political parties had already supported this demand.
