Actors Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have both been linked to the second season of True Detective. While rumours of True Detective Season 2 casting have been swirling about since May — when Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain were the supposed duo — we are now certain that a Season 2 casting announcement is just around the corner. “We’re in conversations now on the cast. And I assume at least some announcements will be happening in the next week,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO, reported ign.com
“I hate to jinx it,” he added, “[but the two scripts we have] are more exciting than the first season. [Nic Pizzolatto is] an incredibly talented writer,” reported Digital Spy.
HBO wanted a true movie star who could play rugged and gritty for the older male character. Kitsch is in talks to play the younger male lead, with Farrell playing the older starring role. Farrell, 38, is reportedly close to signing up for the role, which is said to be the primary focus of the second season of the crime drama.
Other movie stars have also been approached by the network. Apparently, both, Jessica Chastain and Christian Bale turned down the project due to prior commitments.
The first season of the show received five Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Neither of the two will return for the show’s second season.
Series creator Nic Pizzolatto hinted that there are four lead roles in the new cast. The roles are thought to consist of two men and one woman alongside Farrell’s lead character.
